Is increasing unemployment and the benefit bill as a whole a good idea?

I'd have that the other way round. Surely increasing the benefit bill is two steps back?

A complete re-evaluation of how money is spent is what's needed. Withdraw all troops from around the world and cutting the military bill would be a huge start. That money can then be used to offset the other cuts that have been made.

The Troops should stay in Afghanistan, as if they left the taliban would take over within days and 10 years would be wasted

Both valid points Sprocket and Noisy.

The benefit system's been abused for years and neither party has got to grips with the problem.

As for our intervention around the world the cost is in the billions and could be redistributed to areas it's most needed.

There are areas where obvious savings could be made, centralised purchasing being a prime example.

Local authorities, health trusts, education authorities pooling resources and ordering in massive quantities would give them huge power in price negotiations.
