But he did ok against Taylor when he came over, and that raised expectations as well. If he did nothing in the first year, the idea he was coming over to knock Taylor off the top would have quickly gone away... Barney's head shaking lack of belief in himself the first time something doesn't go right coupled with a sense that he should be better than everyone else seems to have been reincarnated in the shape of Michael Smith.
Taylor had been in decline 2004-2007
By his own standards.
He was winning but not hitting the heights.
Barney coming over was just the kick he needed
I would agree with that.
The 04 and 05 world finals were poor by his own standards.
Couple of the x code events of that era he was poor as well

A question to anyone, here.

Was that head-shaking lack of belief in himself already a known Barney trait before Taylor started sinking fangs into him? I don't remember his BDO adventures in any kind of detail but I do remember him seeming smooth, chilled and cheerful throughout 2006.
The head shaking has now been taken to a new level by Michael Smith.

Don't know if it's a false memory, but I feel like I remember him doing it when he couldn't believe that he was losing to Painter at the 2008 worlds.
yes. sid wadell wrote about about RVB's disposition when he was in the BDO and said it would follow him into the PDC.
I believe his remark is in the phil taylor book

Barneys decline can be traced back to the World final of 2009 where he missed 2 darts to go 2-2 since then it was a slow decline and the head shaking started

"It's a great start, I beat an amazing player tonight on one of the biggest occasions of my career," said Durrant, who will face Challenger Fallon Sherrock in Nottingham on Night Two.

"Michael makes the game look effortless and I didn't mean to upset his rhythm with my slower play.

"I was very nervous today, even from early this morning but I had a lovely phone call from my wife before I played and that really helped me.

"Three years ago I was watching the Premier League on a tiny TV at a club in Stockton - people were saying to me 'you could be playing in this one day Glen' and now I'm here - it's an amazing story.

"My only target for this year's Premier League is not to finish last and make sure I make it past Judgement Night."
I like the fact that he's pretty realistic about his game and it's a mentality that's seen him do better than his actual talent level so far.
I would say it is more like false modesty than realism, i'm pretty sure he knows how good he is. I don't think he does it in a sinister way but it's just his M.O to constantly talk up his opponents and attempt to make himself look like a never-ending fairytale story. He gets away with it though and it probably does mean any failings get scrutinised less than other players would so fair play to him I guess even though I personally find it tiresome.

Sid changed his mind later on.

But in Taylor's book, which was released around 2003, he gave the impression that he didn't really rate RVB.

Hopefully the commentators will commentate on each match rather than blathering on about Sherrock while other games happen in the background. I don't want what happened when the commentators almost completely ignored van den Bergh v Payne at the worlds.
