Taylor will be a bit bitter that he caused the surge in prize money yet others, like MvG, are getting more financial rewards from it. At the same time, he'll be proud as well as bitter. Eric didn't teach Phil when to let go, only how to win, ruthlessly. When Eric was no longer the best, he could accept it. Phil had a much tougher time accepting that, and never really did. He hated towards the end of his career that he couldn't just play one tournament and immediately play another tournament as he had done in the past, because he was now too tired. And there was MvG at his best, being utterly ruthless.

The game of darts had changed about 0% in any of our lifetime, at least in what it is fundamentally about. There are no advanced tactics, no great managers influencing things, no brilliant new gym techniques or training methods to improve things and make comparisons especially difficult.

It's folk hoying sharp spears at a board from a specified distance to get down to zero from 501 points. The best way today was the best was in the 1970s: bundle as many darts as possible into the t20 and use the rest of the board to finish what you are left.

The only things which have significantly changed (in this context) are the boards and the darts.

Howay. There is a bairn just run through half a world championship field who boasts lovingly of living off kebabs and 'buying loads of vapes' with his winnings.

Diet, preparation and psychology my hole ImageImage
At 16 the long terms effects won't have had time to kick in.
I'm sure you remember once feeling invincible at that age.
Many players still compete sozzled.

MVG smokes, Smith is obese, etc.

It's still very much a pub game.
The day the world stood still:

I didn't live off kebabs at 16. I did smoke loads, though Image

The point still stands.

Chisnall is a great example of someone who doesn't prepare well for tournaments. How many majors has he won?

Look at who are winning consistently and you will see players who prepare well. Was always Taylor's way.

The lad is obese at 16. That's not a criticism - what he does is his business - but to claim that diet and preparation are key factors when Littler is running riot through the field isn't great timing.

Taylor was a money obsessed, sociopathic winning machine. He was absolutely the exception and not the rule.

Almost every other successful darts player in history is an obese pisshead.

His demise took long enough to come but it was still satisfying for sure.

MvG in a newspaper article the other day said that he knocked Taylor to the floor during the 2017 Grand Slam, after Phil was shadow boxing him and talking about Ricky Hatton. This was the tournament when Phil Taylor was at his most bitter, by far, and mostly took it out on Daryl Gurney. Eric Bristow publicly commented on twitter at the time that it was a shame that Phil Taylor couldn't lose with more humility after MvG beat him in the semis. I remember thinking "Eric, you taught Phil how he must be a ruthless winner. You never told him how to stop".
