I don't have an issue with the ridiculous doubles and trebles on modern boards. The game is essentially unified again so all players are playing on the same kit (or have the chance to), so it isn't that anyone is unfairly disadvantaged.

The issue is with the historical comparisons. Gobshite Gobshite Mardle knows full well the differences between today's boards and those used even fifteen years back but his employer has a narrative to run so he'll say what he needs to say to run it. Darts had a lot of casual fans, so they'll hear that and understand it to mean what Gobshite Gobshite Mardle and Sky want them to understand it to mean.

Edgar found that PDC boards from even 20 years ago were 7.5% smaller than now. How much does that influence averages? Dunno, but it clearly means that's comparing averages now to back then is not like for like.

Looking at the averages, you'd imagine that the difference accounts for about 10-15 points on the averages across the field. Better players will make marginally more than weaker players.

The outliers are the elite in their pomp, with Taylor smashing in regular, ridiculous averages (on a newer board for the time) around 2009-2012 and MvG doing the same (on a newer board for the time) around 2014-2017.
