He did. Sign of the end times with Smith winning the Worlds.

Taylor is smiling somewhere tonight.

I remember being absolutely gobsmacked that Peter Wright won 3 years ago, MvG wasn't at his brilliant best at that point, but he was certainly the best in the world and Wright had a deserved reputation for being a bottler, I think that moment really changed the game

So we are standing with MVG still having 3 world titles. Definitely underachieving

Now has won as many finals as he has lost. And in the ones he won, only Anderson took the game to him, Wright and Smith underperformed

Still the 2nd greatest player ever but these are the games that define your legacy. Taylor will be laughing in his campervan

Wright outplayed him from the first dart.

Goblin tells it pretty straight. Anything other than a win for him is failure. He thought he was unbeatable. Belly had other ideas. Those self doubts could creep back in. Nevermind a 4th and 5th, will he ever become pdc world champion again?
Friday 19th May 2023 - Finally free of the bull shitting no mark of a dart player.

Suspect team: CT1 Filip Sebesta - Greg Ritchie - Jeroen Mioch - CT2 Sean Fisher - Charlie Martin - CT3 Owen Bates - CT4 Thibault Tricole

Taylor used to get a lot of stick when he wasn't reigning world champion, like after Part beat him in 2003. MvG gets away with that situation much more, even back in 2016, 2018, 2020 etc.

John Part said it at the time before that 2020 final, that after you get cut and scarred so much as Wright had against MvG for so long, eventually you're no longer scared of getting cut anymore. Basically a "Fuck it, just win the match" moment. At that time, the fear of losing and/or choking yet again has become very small because it's happened so often.

I must say that those 2020 and 2023 finals have been a bit odd by Van Gerwen. He was a bit underwhelming once his opponents bought the heavy firepower. Before both finals, he seemed a certainty to win by most people.

Perhaps even more. He was big tournament favourite in 2016 and lost to Barney in the Last 16, was tournament favourite in 2018 and lost to Cross in the semis after having had 6 match darts (although Cross had the first match dart), and was clear favourite before both 2020 and 2023 finals and lost them. 2015 and 2013 were possibilities, but those were before he was really dominating darts from week to week, month to month from February 2015 to the summer of 2017, and the slightly below peak form after that until the pandemic struck. Getting whitewashed by Chizzy in 2021 was pretty bad too.

I think MVG will win at least 2 or 3 more.

I dislike the bloke, but he's easily the best player in the world, current form or otherwise. I also can't see someone coming along that puts him completely in the shade.
