Yes, the 07 loss to Barney was the kick up the arse he needed. He knew he wouldn't be able to just cruise in 3rd/4th gear all the time.

Two things gave Phil the kick up the backside he needed

1) Barney coming across from the BDO and beating him in that final
2) The emergence of Wade coming and winning a few titles.

Taylor having a slump between 2003 and 2005 is a bit of a myth. He dominated Barney in head to head meetings in 2005. The games took place off TV, so few got to see them.
