1st January 2023

Post by Randall » Sat Sep 29, 2018 6:02 pm

The other thread got me thinking.

It's five years from now.
Who will make up the top 10 in the world?

Here's the top 10 after the 2013 Worlds to show how impossible this is, by the way:

1 Phil Taylor
2 Adrian Lewis
3 James Wade
4 Michael van Gerwen
5 Simon Whitlock
6 Andy Hamilton
7 Wes Newton
8 Raymond van Barneveld
9 Dave Chisnall
10 Justin Pipe

For ref, Gando was 11th, Wright 26th, Smith 35th, Mensur 59th.

Impossible to guess really. Think Dimitri in a couple years will be able to sort out his floor game, once he gets into the TV events he will kick on. As for Cadby I'm not sure whether he'll ever get a freaking visa, but he's good enough.

4 players there who are still in. Though Wade, Whitlock and Chizzy might be out soon enough.

Not really "still" as far as Simon Whitlock is concerned. Whitlock was briefly world number 3 after the 2014 World Championship, his peak ranking. He was number 4 at the time of the 2014 World Matchplay when reaching the semi finals. He then crashed down with a horrible 2 years afterwards, going out of the top 20. He has done very well to work his way back up into the top 10, and not go the way of Andy Hamilton and Wes Newton.

The irony is that Whitlock used to be Mr. Consistent. Now he's the opposite, going all over the place in terms of consistency.

When was Whitlock out of the top 20, and how far exactly did he fall? I know he was seeded 17th going into the 2017 Worlds, didn't know he fell any further

Really hard to predict, most of the talent is bubbling up on the fringes rather than being ready to take over immediately, hence the high number of new players at the Matchplay and Grand Prix, yet Chizzy still being ranked in the top 8

My top 10 in 4 years time would be something like this:
MvG
Cross
Cadby
De Zwaan
Smith
Dimitri
Gurney
Hopp
Price
Noppy

Top 5 were pretty easy really, three fairly young guys at the top of the game now, as well as the two best prospects (assuming Cadby can actually base himself in England, that's surely the only thing stopping him). There are any number of guys who could be towards the bottom of that top 10. If I had to guess at any Mensur/Wright types that spring from relative obscurity, pffft, maybe Clemens? Joyce?

Agreed about White. Taylor and Beaton prove that you can maintain form well into your 50s if you are fit and determined enough. (although surely Stevie B will be gone from the Top 32 by 2023!)

I think Krusty will still be Top 5 as well by then.
