So your legs are BDO, unfit for purpose. Do what you usually do and take the pain, ignore the decline and cling to false hope.
Or you could be sensible and get it sorted

Re: Shin Splints
I've had them a few times when I used to play squash a lot. Have you upped the amount of walking you do recently, or walking faster than normal, or bought new shoes?
Now you have them you'll just have to rest until they go, with light walking as active recovery and massage the fleshy part at the side of your shin where it hurts - but not too much just to get the circulation going.
Mine used to go after about 1-2 weeks, if they last longer go to the doctor as they can occasionally be a stress fracture (worst case scenario).
When they're better to prevent them in future make sure you have proper arch support in your shoes, when I started using them and bought better trainers for squash they never came back...
Hope they get better, they are a bastard!!

Re: Shin Splints
I'd avoid walking up hills if you can mate. I had bad ones from jogging up them. Plenty of stretching and cod liver oil tablets might help too if you want to rush back out and if you are having trouble finding comfort when sleeping the tablets will def help. Rest is important as Arrow said. I had to chuck exercise for 3 weeks before mine were gone. I was limping when on my feet at work at one point because of them.

Re: Shin Splints
I still managed to cycle up this hill, patricks hill when I was 42 years old.
A guy that game from the area cycled up it 150 times in a row for charity, beating the previous record he set.
When the professional cyclists of tour de france tried to cycle up it years back most failed, including lance armstrong ( ok it was the end of the stage)

Re: Shin Splints
Best cure is to chop your legs off at the knee. You will have no problem with Shin Splints thereafter.
