Dan Wheldon Dies in Crash in Las Vegas
Fifteen-car crash in the Indy 300 in Vegas claims the life of Dan Wheldon. I happened to be watching this and it was a mess. Bloody oval racing.

Never really watched indy racing but thought I pop it on tonight when nothing was on just in time to see a massive 15 car pile up. Sadden to hear that the person involved was a brit who has died from his injuries.
Terrible to see and made even worse when the British commentators just broke down in tears when it was announced. R.I.P.

The US tv coverage was a disgrace. They were endlessly replaying the accident, yet in the the past, the tv companies wouldn't show the replays if they thought the driver had died. After they were aware he had died, they didn't announce it to try and keep viewers watching for ratings purposes.Wookiee wrote:Fifteen-car crash in the Indy 300 in Vegas claims the life of Dan Wheldon. Finally, reality tv has been able to show a death live on tv. The last taboo has been broken. It makes me sick to think that a driver I'd followed for fifteen years or so has died, but the television reaction makes me ashamed of the human race.

Sport ain't reality telly, and TV has shown people dying before: Ayrton Senna and Marc Vivien-Foe being two examples.mrsheen wrote:The US tv coverage was a disgrace. Dd you watch the US coverage? Senna died after a televised event, but the television was respectful. When it became obvious he wasn't getting out of the car unaided, they cut to a camera shot of the pitlane and stuck to that view until the race restarted. To my knowledge, the accident has never been shown on UK television since shortly after it took placeThat is a huge difference to the disgraceful attitude of ESPN and ABC today. The Ginger Ninja wrote:Sport ain't reality telly, and TV has shown people dying before: Ayrton Senna and Marc Vivien-Foe being two examples.mrsheen wrote:The US tv coverage was a disgrace. They exploited someone's death (sky knew he'd passed away 45 mins before it was announced, so ESPN/ABC knowingly showed the death over and over) to keep people watching. The driver parade after the race was timed specifically to finish at the end of their telecast, so don't claim it wasn't manipulated to keep people watching - the very definition of reality tv.

They've been disgusting ever since mate. Not seen the video in question (don't want to watch the accident again), but his head hit a metal pole holding the fences up and the front of Pippa Mann's car penetrated his car causing mortal internal injuries as well as the head injuries. He had no chance and I can't see why anyone wants to watch that over and over, nor why a respected broadcaster thinks anyone would.Brett wrote:If it is then thats disgusting as ESPN are still showing that videoDrZoidberg wrote:was that wheldons car they showed the cockpit cam when it flipped upside down and caught fire near the end of that video?

Never heard of him.
Never knew him.
He never knew me.
So, I will not partake in the grief-tourism if that's ok.

Calm down, Mrs Heen. None of this has any baring on your life or life of your husband and those closest to you.mrsheen wrote:

You will have forgotten all about it shortly when your 'outrage' is stimulated by something else that has got fuck all to do with you.

Good mood, actually.Wookiee wrote:Someone's in a good fucking mood.
Racing drivers die. It's a risk they all knowingly take, but it's appalling that it was used for ratings. That is my point. They knew he was dead and kept replaying it. That's surely nothing to be proud of.
Doesn't affect my life as I didn't know him (said hello to him at Croft in about 1997), but doesn't mean I have to be happy that standards have slipped so much that real deaths are exploited by tv.
