Where does Scott Williams beating MvG rank in the list of World Championship shocks?

Post by thegentle » Tue Jan 02, 2024 12:21 pm

Granted, MvG was well below par, but still, Williams was outside of the top 32 and it still takes a lot to beat the big guns, especially over that format.
Who else can compare? Smiffy beating the reigning and defending 16 time champion of the world? Richardson beating Barney? One of Kirk Shepherd or Jamie Lewis' wins? Going further back, Deller taking out 138 to beat Bristow?

Steve Brennan beating Eric Bristow 2-0 is the biggest shock of all world championship history. Barney losing to James Richardson is 2nd

This is a nice shock but perhaps not in the top 10

I'm Wiki-ing here, forgive me, but would upsets have been more common in the early rounds then considering it was best of 3 sets? Also, to bring up the boring old debate on boards, what would averages of 75 and 78 be worth on today's boards?

Also, Kevin Spiolek beating Taylor in the final unified Worlds?

It would be Bristow was way ahead of everyone at the time even in a 3 set game he shouldn't lose. Around 90 on todays boards.

Spiolek beating Taylor is a great shout

I don't think it was _that_ big a shock. Van Gerwen was struggling so a decent game from Williams beat him.

Clemens beat Price 5-1 in the quarter-finals last year.
Chisnall beat Van Gerwen 5-0 in the quarter-finals in the 2021 event.

Decent shout, but Clemens was a fairly established top 32 player though (up against someone who had lost his head), Scott Williams (who I rate very highly BTW!) has been playing on tour for less than two years. Still took a lot from both players to beat their opponents, if you don't take your chances, they can always turn it on and that must be at the back of your mind!

I don't think anything Chizzy does is a surprise, he can do that to anyone, but likewise he can lose to anyone

Excellent shout, Part wasn't on dazzling form by any stretch, but Davis was a pretty unknown qualifier from America (had played at Ally Pally the year before, losing in the first round) back before they had anything like the CDC or the World Series

Is Williams beating mvg any more of a shock than brendan beating Price and Anderson?

Taylor was 1/50 against Bellyboy in 2014

I saw 1/12 for MvG yesterday

Definitely. MVG was a bigger favourite for the tournament and he had been averaging over 100 for the tournament

That settles it :D

I thought Smith was already a somewhat fancied player back then

It's more of a surprise than a shock to me. With MVG these days, he's inconsistent and he either turns up or he doesn't. Williams is a capable player, if it was some unknown who nobody had heard of then it's a shock, but Williams has proved himself as a decent player.

MVG losing to a mid-90s guy in 2023 didn't even cause a flicker for me but I know that's not conventional thinking.
