2024 Masters

Post by thegentle » Tue Jan 02, 2024 7:32 am

Not the most glamorous event, and the carrot of Premier League qualification has been removed, but for many, it is still a great chance to get their season off to a flyer by picking up some silverware and qualifying for the Grand Slam. Top 24 qualify, top 8 seeded to round 2, 9-24 face each other in round 1

Standings at the minute, top 22 set in stone, but you'd expect some pullouts so Schindler can probably pencil in a Masters debut too.

Humphries jumps to #1 if he reaches the final of the Worlds
Cross jumps to #4 if he wins his semi, though could drop to #7 if he loses to Littler and Scott Williams wins the Worlds
Williams qualifies if he reaches the final (23rd if he loses to Cross, 24th if he loses to Littler), 6th if he beats Littler in the final, 7th if he beats Cross (pushing Wright down to 9th in either case)
Littler can only qualify if he wins, in which case he would jump up to 9th

Humphries #1 seed, Peter Wright guaranteed to be seeded through to round 2, Schindler guaranteed a top 24 spot, only possible change is whether Littler jumps in ahead of Ratajski

Littler is 7th reserve so unless there is a virus outbreak this will not happen

The event seems a little hollow without him to be fair

It will be a bit like when Barney wasn't at the Matchplay in his debut year. He'd just won the UK Open.

'Andrew Hamilton'

There was no 1-year pro tour OoM in those days. The Matchplay was Top 28 plus 4 qualifiers.

It was only in 2008 that they changed the qualification system to include ProTour qualifiers, rewarding consistency rather than the faintly ridiculous situation of one of the two best* players in the world not being there because someone had a good day in a qualifier

*obviously not reflected in the rankings at the time!

Amazed nobody has pulled out yet, particularly Dirk. Mind you, he is also yet to pull out of the World Series event neither
