I can understand why they are mad, they want a new face winning who's fast and entertaining, which Noppert isn't, he's one of the most boring players I've ever seen, keeps playing like that he'll be near the top of my list of players I want to lose just cos they are slow. Would say this is one of the most unlikely victories in PDC history, if anyone stuck a cheeky £5 on him they've made a fair bit of money
I would say it’s on a level with Cullen winning I also think Aspinall was a surprise.
The U.K. open due to its format is the one where you are most likely to get an outsider winning.
Going back some years, I would say Larry Butler winning the Matchplay has to be up there.

Should hoof Smith out and put Noppert in now.

Fitton will probably win a PDC major before Smith.

Nopperts win far surpasses Aspinall’s and Cullens, especially considering Noppert came into this pretty cold having not played in the masters or pro tours cos of his baby, he might’ve played in the euro tour can’t remember but still.
Cullen won what is essentially a warm up event in a 24 man field and Cullen is a way more established player than Noppert
Aspinall was one of the most in form players in the world leading up to the UK open if I remember correctly though he might have gone off at longer odds than Noppert did for this years event as I think the bookies took a while to catch on to Aspinalls ability
Noppert to me has always been one of them who can beat anyone on their day but I never expected him to get through about 6/7 games over a weekend and lift a title

By surpasses them I mean in terms of likelihood not achievement

Don't forget Noppert was a proven champion in the BDO. Aspinall and Cullen didn't have that reputation.

So did i jack, hilarious pic, congrats btw for always keeping hope that Smith would choke yet another final.
I had zero faith in noppert and with his 84 average I was in my right but obese still found away to lose.

I would say Cullen and Noppert are of similar ability personally. When Noppert was runner up in the BDO worlds, he was one of the few BDO players that I thought could make waves in the PDC, it’s took a while but he hasbeen runner up in a PDC major previously ( World Series) and prior to this event starting was ranked 19th in the world, so he is hardly a rank outsider. I suspect him and Cullen will have similar careers in the next few years, with the odd good run here and there in a major, maybe another final.
Time will tell.

I'm with Malt.
Aspinall was following an upward trajectory just before his win, even if it was under the radar. He won a floor event just before the Worlds, beat Price at the Worlds and got to the semi final. It was also only the second year of a renewed tour card, so he had no worries about defending his ranking.
Cullen has done great things on the floor and Euro Tour, played immense vs Van Gerwen at the Worlds couple years back. It's a surprise to see him win one but not a shock because he's been knocking on the door for 2/3 years. Two Euros semis and a proper classic vs Anderson in Blackpool over the course of 3 years or so, meant he's been loitering at the top for longer than Noppert.
However, Noppert has only won one floor event ever. He's also nowhere near most people's minds as a major champion and has only really upped it since the last Grand Prix. He did play the last Euro Tour and beat Van Gerwen in the L16, but his form going into this wasn't a title-winning indicator.
That's why this is most impressive for me. That plus his bottle and composure despite having virtually no final experience and being a huge underdog. The crowd massively fucked him over but he still won. How often does that happen? Yes Smith choked but only after Noppert got that D4.
Well Done Noppie, you beat the crowd and the media which so few do. Also, just tell the critics to fuck off and go back to Ummet Ozcan for the walk on. Good man

Maybe him becoming a father has given him a new lease of life on the dart board. When Wadey became a Dad he won 2 majors back to back. Maybe this can have a bounce effect for Noppie? Good luck to him anyway.
