Should alcohol be banned in darts?

Post by HalloweenJack » Sun Oct 04, 2020 11:28 pm

I’ve recently come across this article, which is an interesting read.

I haven’t really considered this before, but would it be a good experiment to ban alcohol in darts? Maybe trial a tournament where no player can drink and use breathalysers to stop this?

I'd like to hear Bob Ross's view on this topic.

Should alcohol be banned entirely? No. Everyone knows most players drink, and the PDC do a good job of keeping it out of sight.

Would it be wise, or maybe necessary for OH&S reasons, that people throwing weapons in close proximity to referees prove they are under a certain Blood Alcohol level before being allowed to play? Maybe.

It'd be interesting to know if it has ever been discussed, and if so what BAC would be considered safe?

Bring back smoking on stage instead I say !!!

Nothing like the the fog of Jollees nightclub to create the right kind of atmosphere for a good game of darts.

I'm glad they professionalized the sport. Just look at the BDO to see what happens if you don't.

I remember attending the PC events in Crawley the bins were full of spirit bottles smuggled in by the players and the tables littered with pint glasses

Banning booze in a pub game is a bizarre idea

I remember from seeing DRA's lists of fines that there are plenty of players who tried to do that. One of them iirc was Gary.

Darts and alcohol are intertwined with each other, on every level of the game. From the pub leagues and people chucking at home to the PDC. I think it's pretty much impossible to change that. The only possible way would be to ban (or limit) drinking at every single level of the game, in every tournament. Which will not happen.

I'll admit though, it's a pretty interesting thought experiment. How would the best players perform with no booze? How big would the difference be? Would the top of the rankings be completely different? I guess we'll never know. I think the closest we might get to this is if darts makes it to the Olympics somehow, where I'd assume the rules would be different to the usual DRA/BDO/whatever regulations.
The truth, however ugly in itself, is always curious and beautiful to seekers after it.

Yeah you're right, Gary was the case after the ones I recalled seeing.
Apparently somewhere in 2015, Joe Cullen, Brendan Dolan, Kevin Painter and Peter Wright tried to smuggle alcohol into the venue. That's a very weird creative group of twats in crime.

There's only one twat in that list. and it's Kevin Painter.

The way things are going, there wont be any pubs left and our dear leaders will have the perfect excuse to outlaw alcohol so yes, it could end up as darts without beer.
