I wonder what exactly is going on in van Gerwen's head. Blame the new darts all you want, but he doesn't seem in the right frame of mind to win like he is accustomed to.

I don't think the change in darts manufacturer will have helped. His game's very erratic now.

I'm sure it hasn't helped, but I'm not sure that's the main thing. I can't imagine the way he lost the world championship isn't a key factor. All through the tournament he looked bored, until he flicked a switch and hit what he needed to in order to progress comfortably. In the final, he tried giving it the same, turning it on in the third and fourth set to get back to 2-2. With Wright's history, he probably thought that would be enough. And it wasn't. Then he tried flicking the switch again and it didn't even touch Wright. I don't think he was used to flicking the switch when it really mattered to him and finding that his opponent wasn't remotely thrown off by it.
