Phil Taylors dominance

Post by Justin Credible » Fri Oct 28, 2011 7:24 pm

I read a post elsewhere on how fortunate we are to have witnessed the taylor era.

It got me thinking are we fortunate ?
or is it a bad thing one player can dominate a sport to the extent he has ?

Personally I think we are fortunate to have witnessed some of the best performances ever on a dart board. His achievements will never be matched.I know people said the same of bristow but he has taken dominance to a whole new level.

Unfortunately with that dominance came a downside, too many one horse races, one sided matches and the anticipation of certain encounters failing to live up to their expectation as taylor hammered those seen as a threat.

The almost year long lull in which taylor failed to capture a few titles was badly needed for the sport, as it gave others the chance to capture titles before taylor regained his dominance.

So has the taylor era been a great thing or not ?

Always great to see the best in action, not Taylors fault that others couldn't keep pace with him.
One year I got a bike for my birthday. So I went peddling off down the road and knocked an old lady down.
'Can't you ring your bell?' She said. 'I can ring my bell,' I said 'But I can't ride my bike'

Agree that close games are better to watch, but you do have to admire a master at work.

When Davis was mopping up every snooker tournament going he was slated as boring etc etc. Now he aint everyone likes him.

I think you are right there, same with hendry in that sense.

I do believe we will look back in years to come and say there was no one like him but I grew up watching darts where bristow, lowe, jocky, bob anderson were all on the go and competition was fierce and nothing was certain like it is now, even lakeside in the late eighties and early nineties.

I am looking forward to the day taylor fucks off though.

I don't Doc, watching an absolute masterclass has as much merit as watching a real nip and tuck game in my book.

Barca last year slaughtered Man U with fantastic footie and the result was never in doubt. I found the match spellbinding with the brilliance I was watching.

football isn't monotonous and repetetive as darts. there are many different way to be entertained watching football, and many different instances.

watching taylor bang in his 35th 140 with his dreary throwing action while his opponent throws his darts away isn't really what i'd call watchable.

Did you think that watching Hendry clear up time after time when his opponent let him in Doc? It's the same thing mate but Taylor's managed to stay ahead longer, albeit with a few losses

I wasn't Doc. By then I'd watched him and Davis take fifteen (maybe thirteen, don't quite remember) between them over a twenty year period. Superb players both but they were slated in their pomp and are now revered.

as i said in my first reply to this topic, its both a blessing and a curse.

obviously watching his level of play is the best its ever going to be, but when it's not competition, and add in his boring style of play for me, it's not good to watch.

As much as I can't stand Taylor if it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't have started watching darts

I remember sitting with my granda watching the likes of Bristow, Jocky & Lowe in the 80s but I was only a nipper at the time
