probably will go down as the greatest (even though he never won at lakeside) will probably end up with close to ten world titles if he goes till he is 40, in this climate that would be outstanding, taylor was beating reg harding and women players for some of his early tinpot wdc titles

I'd put him 4th now, behind Taylor, Barneveld and Bristow, but I think he has the potential to be 2nd in the future. Only Taylor and Bristow have done the sort of dominance that van Gerwen is doing, and only Taylor has the better overall package in my opinion. Van Gerwen has improved every year since his PDC breakthrough in 2012. In 2012, he was the best player on the floor and started to get it together seriously on TV by the latter months of the year. In 2013, van Gerwen continued to be the best player on the floor and only Phil Taylor was better on the TV as Taylor had a last hurrah of TV dominance. In 2014, van Gerwen becomes the world champion and the world number 1, and is clearly the best player of the year, but not yet dominant as players like Taylor, Wade, Lewis and King, had some tournaments where they looked great. In 2015, van Gerwen is dominant, yet a few big tournaments slipped from his grasp (World Championship, Premier League, World Grand Prix). In 2016, van Gerwen was just as dominant and this time won all the TV majors except the World Championship and the Champions League of Darts, culminating in the best darts he's played to regain the World Championship in 2017.

Still not convinced that MvG can't surpass Taylor in the GOAT. Not saying he will but he has the potential to do it, and I don't see anyone yet that has what MvG has talent wise. It comes down to longevity for me. If in 10 years MvG is still gurning and churning his way to Major wins then we can start talking about GOAT.

Mvg won't have to win 16 titles to top the pile.
If he continues to dominate this era for a decade that may be enough.
His first dart in the top of the 60 bed would routinely have been a single 10 years ago mind. The averages he is throwing compared with Taylor going 100+ with a double start in 2002/3 are none comparable.

Top five now without a doubt with the potential to replace Taylor as the best ever

Taylor winning 16 world titles is just insanity.Noisycrowds wrote:he wont replace taylor as he was on the radio just now and said he will never get to taylors record as he will retire long before then and hed be happy with 5 world titles

Taylor, Bristow and Lowe ill give you in terms of achievement.
Barney has only one "real" world title.

You could add Anderson for his three proper Masters but that's a tad tenuousThe General wrote:Taylor, Bristow and Lowe ill give you in terms of achievement.

Depending on your view of history he is tied with several others on two. I loved Dennis and Jocky but they wouldnt have lived with mvg. The cowboy, tenuous at best.M H wrote:You could add Anderson for his three proper Masters but that's a tad tenuousThe General wrote:Taylor, Bristow and Lowe ill give you in terms of achievement.

Top 5 possibly even fourth. Only Taylor, Brissy and Lowe definitely ahead. Barney is no doubt a legend but won 4 of his titles when the best player in the world wasn't in the field. Having said that, it's a myth that MVG is beating the best fields ever seen in the game most of today's players ain't got it between the ears to win the big trophies. Wright is world number 3 is he a truly great player? Err, no. All the best players play in the PDC it's just there's not many top top players around full stop, they can play great darts but they're not great darts players if that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense.
Taylor
Bristow
Lowe
Mvg
Gando
Lewis
MVG has to be ahead of the other two recent double winners based on his domination of them and the events they play in.

Re: Where do you rank MVG now on the all time greatest list?
Agreed, his dominance of the rest of the events is the tie-breaker. I just can't bring myself to put Lewis so high up I'd have Wilson, Priestley and possibly Part ahead of him. I suppose that might just be because I'm pissed off that someone with his talent isn't matching or getting close to MvG when he could be if he put the work in.The General wrote:Makes perfect sense.
