Dog Dies from Fractured Skull—ASPCA Arrests Suspect
“This was a senseless attack on an innocent animal,” says Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for Humane Law Enforcement.
Early this morning, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Queens resident Jerry Melendez for beating his five-year-old Chihuahua, Spotye.
The investigation began on February 10, when ASPCA Agents responded to a call from a local animal hospital. A Chihuahua suffering from serious trauma and multiple seizures had been admitted by his owner. Spotye had to be euthanized due to the extent of his injuries.
The remains were signed over to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for a necropsy. Results revealed that the Spotye had sustained a fractured skull caused by blunt force impact, and suffered from hemorrhage to his left eye.
“This was a clear-cut case of violent abuse,” says Wolf. “Animal cruelty is a serious crime, and we are doing everything we can to see that the victims receive justice.”
Melendez, 33, was arrested by ASPCA Special Agent Debbie Ryan and charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony. If convicted, he faces up to twenty years in jail and a $200,000 fine.

Abused pooch named World's Ugliest Dog
A scarred dog with deformed lips and eyelids and missing patches of fur may not sound like a winner, but 2-year-old mutt Peanut — who bears all of those features and then some — was crowned the World's Ugliest Dog at the Sonoma-Marin Fair's contest in Petaluma, California.
The little pooch, believed to be a Chihuahua-shih-tzu mix, had a very tough start to his life. He was seriously burned while still a puppy, and spent more than nine months at an animal hospital before his new owner, Holly Chandler of Greenville, North Carolina, adopted him.
"We're trying to use him as a poster child for what can happen to animals who are abused," Chandler told the Associated Press. She also said she plans to use the $1,500 prize to help pay for other pets' veterinary bills.

Fact # 2 : All dogs can be traced back 40 million years ago to a weasel-like animal called the Miacis which dwelled in trees and dens. The Miacis later evolved into the Tomarctus, a direct forbear of the genus Canis, which includes the wolf and jackal as well as the doG.

Fact # 99 : Dog urine can corrode metal. Allowing your dog to wee on a lamp-post could be more dangerous than you think - because the acids in the urine can corrode the metal.
In April 2003 Derbyshire County Council spent £75,000 carrying out a six month survey of one million lamp-posts amid fears that dog wee was causing the bases to crumple.
