One year I got a bike for my birthday. So I went peddling off down the road and knocked an old lady down.
'Can't you ring your bell?' She said. 'I can ring my bell,' I said 'But I can't ride my bike'

Take a look at your "windows task manager" you've probably got a lot of processes on the go which you don't need.

A lot of processes are added when you install new programs and automatically begin on start-up even if you are not using that program. This is one of the things that causes your computer to start up more slowly. Always worth having a look at installed programs via the control panel and uninstalling those that you rarely or haven't used for some time.

dont bother with processes just yet...go to applications and see whats running if nothing but what is expected to run then go back to processes and google each process name and it will tell you exactly if its op systems, virus, trojan, needed or not needed

I started a completely useless information thread on another forum also
that thread is doing as well or as bad as this, depending how you view it.
