You can have:
groups of 4, for 32 players
or
groups of 3, for 48 players.
Not even a need to ponder. More players, for me, every single time. No loss, all gain.
Would you vote for expanding the Matchplay or Grand Prix?
Let's assume the format doesn't get any better or worse
No way. Matchplay shouldn't be diluted, and Grand Prix isn't worth expanding.
The Grand Slam is OK to expand for me because:
(1) It's always had the aspect of giving some new/young players opportunities.
(2) An expanded field means all the ET and PC winners should get an invite. Previously a lower-ranked player winning a PC would know that they weren't going to make it unless they could at least double up, and even then might not make it.
48 should guarantee the Pro Tour winners. Last year there were 34 TV finalists, affiliates and winners, with 10 PC winners who either didn't make it (Searle, Heta, Van Barneveld, Dobey, Dolan, Soutar, Clayton, Plaisier) or made it via the qualifiers (Noppert, Ross Smith and Menzies).
They could add more of the lesser affiliates, and still keep 8 TCHQs. Or, I'd cut the base number of TCHQs to 4, and take Pro Tour finalists to add possibility of giving a bit more back to the Pro Tour, and then expand the TCHQs if the numbers still don't add up to 44.
