Btw Lowe hitting a 9 darter on camera does not somewhat draw him level with Bristow.

The TV 9 darter has to be the most overrated achievement in darts.

Jocky Wilson almost did it against Deller in the '83 World Professional Semi Final when he missed D12

Leighton Rees did a 10-darter against Alan Evans at the 1978 World Championship. At the time, it was big news.

ThirdBestPosterInTheWorld wrote: Wed Aug 16, 2023 4:19 pm I know that Jocky made 7 perfect darts and 8 perfect darts at the World Champs. I think both were before Lowe hit his, weren't they?

And I know Priestley hit 7 perfect darts in one of the earlier WDC World Finals.
Dennis Priestley had 8 perfect darts in the 1999 World Matchplay semi final against Rod Harrington. He narrowly missed the double 18. He blew about £25,000 with the miss.
ThirdBestPosterInTheWorld wrote: Wed Aug 16, 2023 4:19 pmDid Bristow ever get close? It's the one thing that Lowe managed to get over him, balancing out their statuses somewhat. Well, I think so.
Eric Bristow regularly said that he hit 7 perfect darts in a TV match about a dozen times, but he never hit the 8th perfect dart. The only 9-darters that Bristow hit were on the floor and in practice.

What was worse for Eric is that he and John Lowe used to have a prize money sharing arrangement, similar to what Phil Taylor and Dennis Priestley had from 1993-2000. The only problem is, Eric decided to end that arrangement in early 1984, before that October 1984 9-darter where Lowe won £102,000.
ThirdBestPosterInTheWorld wrote: Wed Aug 16, 2023 4:19 pmI started watching darts in the mid-90s, as a kid, so all the stuff from the 80s I've only seen by replay.

I recall Merv missed double 18 for a 9er at Lakeside. I recall quite vividly watching it live, although I've never heard anyone, especially Merv, mention it again. Can't find a video of it.
I believe the Mervyn King one that you mention was against Raymond van Barneveld at the last Embassy in 2003, a semi final. It was a very good match.

Some of the more obvious ones, which a lot of people who weren't fans at the time wouldn't know about, were Peter Evison at both the 2002 and 2003 PDC World Championships. Evison missed double 18 by a fraction against Richie Burnett at the 2002 World Championship (which would have been a £100,000 prize, at a time when the PDC World Champion got £50,000), and then Evison missed double 18 for a 9-darter against Wayne Gobshite Gobshite Mardle at the 2003 World Championship (which would have been a diamond worth a 6-figure sum). Evison blew a huge fortune with those two missed doubles.

The most outrageous attempt at a 9-darter was in the 1999 World Matchplay final. Peter Manley needed 144 to do the 9-darter against Rod Harrington. For the 7th dart, Manley hit treble 18; for the 8th dart, Manley hit double 20; for the 9th dart, Manley went for the bullseye and just missed it.

Other close ones were at the World Grand Prix at Rochester in 1998, when Phil Taylor was distracted by Sid Waddell's commentary noise in the final against Rod Harrington. Taylor was distracted after needing 161 and hitting treble 20 with the 7th dart, after Sid shouted "HE NEEDS TREBLE 17!!!". Taylor hit the treble 17, but then missed the bullseye. Phil later said to Sid "Don't worry about it. I hit the treble 17, I missed the bull on my own. Now, if you had shouted BULL!!! and I'd missed, I'd have bloody strangled you!". Taylor missed out on £25,000 with that miss, when the World Grand Prix champion at the time got £9,000.

Rod Harrington had 8 perfect darts himself against Phil Taylor at the 1999 World Grand Prix, in their semi final. He missed the bull.
Thanks, I'll have to see if I can find these. Should be able to find them with the information about the opponent.

I didn't know about Evison missing the double twice for 9-darters, nor Harrington. The commentators and Sky used to bring up Taylor missing the bull regularly, and show the video of it, so I knew about that. I only started watching PDC darts in the early 2000s. I didn't know about Priestley missing the double either. Probably Sky's Taylor bias. Although they used to mention and show Manley's attempt often in Matchplay promos, which is where I first saw it.

I didn't mention Rees' 10-darter because he hit a single 20 in one of his first three darts. Although you're correct, in terms of the number of darts thrown, that was the closest to a televised 9 darter before Lowe hit the first one, as far as I know.

Surprised that Eric never got closer than 7 perfect darts on TV, then. Given everything else he accomplished.
I think John Lowe played so well against Phil Taylor in their 2002 World Matchplay semi final (giving Taylor a huge scare, with Lowe leading 11-9 and 13-11 before losing 15-17) because Lowe was very pissed off with Sky's 9-darter commentary/punditry, like them saying "the first one" or "the first one live on TV". Neither was true. John Lowe was the first 9-darter on TV in 1984. Shaun Greatbatch had done a 9-darter live on Dutch TV in early 2002 at the Dutch Open (which I didn't know about at the time of Phil Taylor's 9-darter against Chris Mason). Sid Waddell even got into a fight with a Dutch journalist over it.

So Duzza and Wolfie both got closer to a televised 9-darter than Bristow did?
