I once did a fantasy football thing using every... well I won't go there. FIFA doesn't really use actual geography. Australia isn't in Asia, for example. UEFA is a bit funny too... Kazakhstan isn't really in Europe as far as I know. So basically I'm fucked.

Australia were in Oceania Confederation until the 2006 World Cup. FIFA kept promising there would be 1 place for Oceania but they left it at 0.5 even after going to 32 teams, so we decided to join Asia after that.
Ironically we did qualify in 2006 for the first time since 1974 by beating Uruguay in a Play off. Since then we have qualified easily through Asia each time, despite our team becoming progressively worse.

I recall this somewhat. Pretty much a joke that a continent/region whatever doesn't get a full spot. Though it's also bit of a joke that you can switch around as you please, it seems justified in this case.Captain Hobo wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 2:14 pmIf anyone is interested in why...Rogg wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 2:07 pmI once did a fantasy football thing using every... well I won't go there. Well, Oceania certainly doesn't deserve a full spot now that it's New Zealand and not much else. The Thorn wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 2:16 pmI recall this somewhat. Funnily enough in 2010 the Kiwis won their playoff and got to the Finals as well.

Greenland is considered part of the North American continent despite being an autonomous territory of Denmark.
Come on, I’ve been waiting nearly 3 fucking years for the North American quiz.

Their national football team is trying to join CONCACAF (the North American and Caribbean football region) will be pretty weird geographically but would be cool to see a Greenland v Mexico match upHalloweenJack wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 12:33 am Greenland is considered part of the North American continent despite being an autonomous territory of Denmark.

It is actually quite interesting, Greenland only have like a few weeks period in the year to play football because of the weather there so complete their league and cups all within like 2 weeks. Not really sure how they could have a genuine national team unless they have an indoor stadium

Maybe but it’s hard to get approved into these confederations as it is, not being able to play at home would be a big stumbling block

Suspect they are on a hiding to nothing then. Some nations can't play at home in November during the international break but this is a bit easier to work around than 11.5 months a year.TheMalteseDart wrote:Maybe but it’s hard to get approved into these confederations as it is, not being able to play at home would be a big stumbling block
