2017 Players Championship Finals, MvG's road: Paul Nicholson, Steve West, Darren Webster, Jan Dekker, Justin Shite, and Jonny Clayton in the final. Highest ranked player faced is Webster at 24th. Ludicrous.

That's one thing, but it's also just other top players underperforming. Instead of Dekker he should've been playing Wright, instead of Pipe he should've been playing Gurney, instead of Clayton he should've been playing Anderson or Suljovic or whatever.

Definitely up there.

The Muffinman beating Wright, Pipe beating Gurney, shambles of a half. Entertaining though.

Bit strong. Wright and Gurney give it plenty all year round. They just both happened to lose narrowly this weekend, as did Suljovic.

MVG is clearly some sick monster but let's not go absolutely fucking mad. Wright gives it his heart and soul weekly.

Mvg uses the emotions to his advantage, it often seems the opposite for Wright.

What baffles me is the recent form of Wade (in the last year especially) and Lewis (since early 2014, really). What has happened to them recently? Wade won a lot of majors, and was top 3 with Taylor and Barney for years, and then top 5. Lewis was a 2-time world champion and said after his second World Championship win that he would win it "10 times, at least".

Whitlock in the summer of 2014 was seen as Mr. Consistency, was world number 4, and was playing some of the best darts of his life. Nobody could have foreseen his awful 2 year slump to come before his recent revival into the top 10. Hamilton started slumping too, and has not stopped. Newton the same as Hamilton. Terry Jenkins clearly lost interest from 2015, and he was a grinder capable of beating anyone (unless it's a TV final).

With van Gerwen like he is today, we could have done with all of them around as they were then.

Darts is a sport that lends itself easily to players having hot hands and short term success. Add the structure of the OOM as a 2 year deal, players like Newton, Hamilton etc easily deceive the fans into perceiving they are something more than they are. I fully suspect Menstruate to follow this route as well.

John Part was also a great e.g. of this, tho he did accomplish way more than Newton and Hamilton. But Part was a guy who got hot in a few events every couple years. He did enough to keep getting the invites to the big ones and of course winning a world title or two kept him in the rankings.

I'm not trying to ruin this moment but...

Think we have a more up to date thread on this, anyone?
