Steve Beaton was the tournament favourite, led 2-0 against Nick Gedney and lost 2-3. The following year, the same thing, Beaton the tournament favourite, 2-0 up and loses 2-3, this time against Diamond Dave Askew. In 1996, Beaton isn't so hyped compared to Burnett, Barneveld and Gregory, yet beats Stompe, Part, Adams, Fordham and Burnett to win the whole thing.vizIIsto wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 6:35 pm 1994 BDO Worlds.
1. Huge exodus of all the good players.
2. Part faced no competition despite averaging just 86. Lost just one set. For such a dominant display that was low even for the mid 90's.
3. 6-0 win in the final with only 82 average. Priestley averaged 94 in the WDC final.
4. Here's how the 8 seeded players did:
* Steve Beaton 2-3 Nick Gedney (??)
* Ronnie Baxter 0-3 John Part
* Roland Scholten 3-0 Sean Palfrey
* Wayne Weening 2-3 Magnus Caris
* Per Skau 0-3 Martin Adams
* Dave Askew 0-3 Ian Sarfas (??)
* Shayne Burgess 0-3 Steve McCollum (doesn't even have his own Wikipedia page)
* Russell Stewart 0-3 Bobby George
Only 1/8 with 5 matches lost 0-3.
5. Bobby George reached the final with a broken back. Hit 10% doubles in the final.
6. It's BDO. Fuck the BDO.

Re: World titles with least merit
Nick Gedney - I still believe Nick is the best player to come out of Coventry. Obviously Steve Beaton is the daddy for reasons known. However, Nick's story is not to dissimilar to Scott Rand. Nick wasn't interested in playing full time, while Scott gave it a real go. Both formidable players on their day. Both stopped playing far too young. Scott went back to driving wagons, as indeed does Dean Winstanley.vizIIsto wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 6:35 pm 1994 BDO Worlds.

P.S. Steve Beaton was 1/7 to win. Gedney did nothing for 2 sets and trailed to nil. He then played as we knew he could reeling off 3 straight sets to ko the Adonis. Both Cov lads and superleague/country colleagues. Ah, the memories.
Cheers!

Scott Rand. He had some month in December 2011. He spoke, played and acted like an elite player that month. It was impressive. He beat Barney and Wade very well at the Players Championship, led Painter 9-6 in the semis before losing 9-10, then thrashed Andy Smith 3-0 in sets (9-0 in legs) at the World Championship, but was undone by a killer outshot by Colin Lloyd in the next round at a very key moment.

Every world title has the same merit. PDC Worlds, BDO Worlds, WDF World Cup they are all valid
The truth, however ugly in itself, is always curious and beautiful to seekers after it.

Re: World titles with least merit
I remember he played like shit in the Lloyd game as I backed him. The pressure of being the massive favourite got to him, plus he announced before the game he was quitting his job to go full time which would have added more pressure.PT13 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 11:12 pm Scott Rand.
