A new podcast. How refreshing to find the show addressing gender and identity politics.

https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-61075197

A new Doctor Who podcast spin-off series is making the show more female and LGBTQ+ than ever before.

Doctor Who: Redacted, written by a transgender woman and with a transgender star, premieres on BBC Sounds this week.

It's the story of three young women who make a conspiracy theory podcast about a mysterious blue box that crops up throughout history.

They also end up having an encounter of their own with a certain time-travelling alien.

"It's a real first for the Doctor Who universe to have a cast that's completely led by women and completely led by queer women," writer Juno Dawson tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

The Jodie Whittaker era has already explored LGBTQ+ themes, including time travel assistant Yaz having a crush on The Doctor - which will be revisited in a new TV special.

"It's important that every person who comes to Doctor Who brings their own little identity," adds Juno.

"And of course, as a transgender woman myself it was important to me to see the lead character being trans as well."

Doctor Who is a gender politics activism show with an occasional sci-fi/fantasy element.

In terms of politics you mean? Imposing race/gender/identity stuff on it at the expense of everything else? I don't really know anything about the comics world.

They are all at it.

South Park recently changed the name of the character Token Black....to Tolkien Black ffs. And had literally a full episode about it where one character faced up to his racial prejudices as he had never realised that was his name all along

Creating new characters with the relevant traits would be too passive I guess?

Making massive changes to existing characters seems to be the whole point. At this stage it feels like plain and simple vandalism. Entertainment has taken a very strange turn.

It has to be a main character so attention is drawn it sufficiently.
Marvel hasn't had an original idea In 25 years so this shit is perfect for them

Nothing pulls you out of your entertainment choices like feeling you're being accused of holding nasty attitudes about skin shades and underpants contents. I mean wtf.

Funnily enough there's only one incarnation of the Doctor I've ever seen grading one gender over another and that'll be the one Chibnall created. He's gross.

"Get woke go broke" has become a common expression. I've no idea what the numbers say in either direction but maybe the creators are under some kind of giant delusion and it will all crash and burn given time? Doctor Who is obviously wrecked.

Let's see how Amazon's Lord of the Rings turns out... they've spent the GDP of half a continent on that. You don't mess with Tolkien fans. They make the mushrooms seem kind and jovial...

In this climate you know the first thing they'll do with any female character in Lord of the Rings. Give her a giant fuck off sword and have her slaughter millions. Because that's always a stupid cunt's idea of how "a strong woman" must behave.

What's the spec market mate?

Essentially the big players are in cahoots with influencers to promote the sale of future books
Seems every book has a new character that will be the next big thing
They also publish at least 3 covers for every issue
Some can have 50

Tells you what Randolf. Go through the whole lot closely and list every story for which you have some kind of functioning opinion. Be it good, bad or indifferent.
I'll then do the same with your list and see how much overlap we have.
