This is even more embarrassing, he gets stick granted, but nobody acts like he's not a class player. "Was meant to get smashed off Searle, was meant to get smashed off Jose tonight", don't think there were many people saying that at all, such a chip on his shoulder

Pretty sure Gareth Bale did it way before Smith.

Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
Depends on what you mean by "succeeded". To Phil Taylor and Eric Bristow, success is only finishing first. There's a reason why Bristow savaged Taylor in the 1980s one time for calling him up and happily saying that he had played well but had lost in the final. Bristow was basically sending the message that finishing second is failure. Dominant winners therefore have different definitions of failure to other people.
A peak Martin Adams is probably top 5. But long term how would he cope with the more relentless playing schedule, even of 10 years ago? At first, probably fine, but the real test is 3-4 years in when some fatigue starts setting in and you have prize money on the Order of Merit to defend with ranking places at stake. If Adams joins the PDC in late 2001, as the Skol Six of Steve Beaton, Chris Mason, Ronnie Baxter, Kevin Painter, Andy Jenkins and Paul Williams did, who knows what would have happened in Adams' career. The schedule was a lot less back then, more money in exhibitions if you were a really big name, but there was still quite a bit of travel. You didn't have a lot of floor events in one location, like Wigan and Barnsley.
And it was the 2015 Grand Slam where Adams impressed in the group stages by winning all 3 matches, before he lost 9-10 to Kim Huybrechts in the Last 16. In the 2016 Grand Slam, Adams lost all 3 group matches.
And is it a coincidence that Adams starts winning BDO majors soon after Raymond van Barneveld has moved to the PDC?

Wolfie was a great addition to Slam. I was gutted when he lost to Huybrechts.

He benefitted greatly from the defections of Thornton, Webster and Anderson too.
Out of his 6 BDO majors, only 2 were won before those three players left.

Adams has won 8 BDO majors, you forgot the classic Zuiderduin Masters. He won that twice prior to the players mentioned left. He won that event in 1996 and 2000sennafan24 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 5:41 pmHe benefitted greatly from the defections of Thornton, Webster and Anderson too.
