Aye. They had a lot of classics. Didn't really have a dud until the 2006 World Matchplay Last 16 match they had, where Taylor had his poorest match of the week by miles yet still won 13-2.
The 2005 UK Open Last 16. Part led Taylor 4-0, 7-1 and 10-6 in a race to 11. Taylor won 11-10, and went on to win the tournament, and did a 9-darter in the semi against reigning champion Scholten. In the 2004 World Matchplay semi final, Taylor led Part 10-0 and threatened the ultimate humiliation, but Part fought back hard, reducing Taylor's lead to 13-6 and had darts to narrow it further. Taylor won 17-8 in the end. But Part fighting hard from 0-10 down is why he continued to be a menace to Taylor in 2005 too.

In the years of 2003, 2004 and 2005 combined, Phil Taylor lost 5 matches on television. John Part beat Taylor in 4 of those (2003 World Championship final, 2003 Las Vegas Desert Classic semi final, 2004 UK Open quarter final, 2005 World Matchplay quarter final). The other was Andy Callaby (2004 World Grand Prix Last 32).
Part was excellent at sensing opportunities, which both his 1994 and 2008 world titles were. He came close again in 2012 as well.
For a brief time his head to head record against Taylor was quite impressive. The scoreline read 5-3 after the 2003 Desert Classic and then 7-4 after the 2004 UK Open. After that, however, he went back into Taylor's pocket. Part's win over him at the 2005 Matchplay came after 6 straight losses to Taylor, and Part would then not beat Taylor again until 2011.
Part also didn't finish the job after beating Taylor in those other TV majors. He lost in the final against Lloyd, Scholten and Manley respectively.
He's an odd case of someone who was usually lucky to win when he did (94 and 08 world titles), and someone who should have won more (PDC majors between 2003-2005).

Clearly wasn't professional enough but not surprising since he was never number 1

Part was world number 1 at various times in 2003 and 2004. Old ranking system then, admittedly. Part got it back in 2004 after winning tournaments in North America when Taylor took a few months off after the 2004 World Championship (following a brief 4-day Taylor retirement too).

It's certainly true about Part not winning more majors in that 2003-2005 period. Part seemed to see beating Taylor as the final, and said so at the 2005 World Matchplay in particular, although he quickly became determined to beat Manley in the semis to avoid a repeat of the 2003 Las Vegas Desert Classic final. Part and Manley had some pantomime needle going on at the time (2005 World Matchplay) as well, with Taylor joining in in their post-match interview at one point.
Also, going by form in the tournament itself, John Part was the best player at the 2008 World Championship. Kevin Painter was next best, who Part beat in the semi final. It was also one of the rare times, non-Taylor related, when Manley's mind games backfired. Manley said before facing Kirk Shepherd in the quarter final that Shepherd's opponents had missed chances and that "when I get my chance, I won't miss", but Manley missed 2 match darts and lost 4-5 in sets.

It was a wide open field that year.
Taylor had played very well in the Grand Slam the month prior. Wade had also won the Grand Prix in October and the Matchplay in July.

The open was where Taylor walked off at 10-10 allegedly thinking it was a break

I love this thread.
Simply because I only consider these 4 events to be PDC majors.

For me, the big 5 are World Championship, World Matchplay, Premier League, Grand Slam of Darts and World Grand Prix. UK Open is sixth.

Worlds
Matchplay
Grand Prix
Grand Slam
UK Open
The PL to me is just a glorified Exbo same as World Series might be a lot of money on offer but I'd rather watch a Players Championship or Euro tour at least there is something meaningful at stake.
