The jump from 1 to 2 is a huge deal. Dimwit joins the 2 club.

I don't think Taylor's quantity of wins in these four events will ever be matched, especially within the timeframe he won them in.

Taylor was a PDC player for 24 years (1994-2018) and in that time won 46 of these titles (UK Open also didn't start until 2003 + GP didn't start until 98)

MVG has been a PDC player for 17 years (2007-2024) and has "only" won 15 of these titles.

Even if MVG won Ally Pally, Matchplay, GP, and the UK Open every year for the next 7 years, he would not match the tally Taylor amassed after 24 years.

MvG has already blown it, compared to Taylor, at the World Championship. MvG's record there from 2018 is more like a 2011-2018 Taylor. Taylor in his pomp won it 11 years out of 12, and was runner-up in the other.

2007 is about the only year where Taylor was playing amazing at the World Championship and didn't win it (2015 perhaps comes close). MvG did it in 2020 and 2023 (the best player of the tournament before both finals), and other years like 2013, 2016 and 2018. Taylor got massive stick for being an "ex-world champion" when Part beat him in 2003, even from Roy Keane!

MVG was also bossing Ally Pally 2024 until the Williams game. He didn't drop a set to Barry, Veenstra or Bunting, and posted some very strong averages. It's not like Williams played out of this world stuff to beat him either. It was far more that MVG had another of his off-nights.

I think it's largely been that way since around 2020 when he changed his darts supplier. That was when his defeats on TV started to become more regular.

Although a quick scan suggests he was unlucky to lose on TV at times in the early 2020s. Wright played the game of his life to beat him at the 2021 Matchplay, as did Chizzy to beat him at Ally Pally 2021. Hump also played exceptionally to beat him at the 2021 UK Open.

Over the past year the likes of Gilding, Heta, Dolan, Dobey, Van Veen, Williams and Mensur all beat him while playing decently, but not exceptionally. So you may have a point.

Despite his decline, MVG has still won more "Premier" TV events than anyone else so far in the 2020s.

MVG - 8
Wright - 7
Price - 5
Hump/Clayton - 4
Smith - 2

I'm more concerned that there is a genuine argument that Wright is the greatest player of the 2020s so far.

Only 1 Premier TV titles fewer than MVG, and the only player to win 2 World Titles this decade.

For all his on-stage antics, Wright is quite good at darts. I'd rather watch him win a tournament than MVG.

I think.

Not sure after typing it.

It feels so wrong.

The 2021 World Matchplay saw the best Peter Wright. He even battered Michael van Gerwen the way that MvG used to do to him.

And Wright's late surges against Michael Smith at the 2021 Grand Slam and 2022 World Championship are brilliant.

He won't be the greatest player of the 2020s overall though, we can be fairly sure of that!

I don't know how 'unlucky' MvG was to have amazing averages thrown at him, I think it's as much a sign that they weren't scared of him anymore than 'luck' (same goes for Ian White when he seemed to have ton plus averages thrown at him left right and centre at the Worlds)

I understand that certain players are easier to play against than others (pace, aura, etc)

However, it's very rare for Chizzy and Wright to play that exceptionally on TV, especially over a long format.

I guess Wright's monster average can be partially attributed to him no longer being scared of MVG, but with Chizzy I would suggest it was quite random. Chizzy is very difficult to predict.

Peter Wright at the 2021 World Matchplay was in even better form at that event than he was when he won his 2 World Championship titles. Just relentless, and as businesslike as I've ever seen him, even largely blanking his friend Dimitri who spent the first lockdown at Wright's place in 2020. A cold, ruthless assassin that week, and even MvG got battered from pillar to post in a complete reversal of the 2010s dynamic.

Peter Wright is one of the ultimate role models for persistence if you try and fail again and again and again. Keep persisting and you can turn it around. In the 2010s he went through all the bad defeats with different ways of losing, from being battered, to underperforming, to missing championship darts, and he kept persisting, and became a multiple major winner and multiple World Champion eventually.
