One of the best stands I ever saw was smith and Russell staging a rear guard action in the windies in 1990
Hardly scored any runs but tension was palpable

Clearly not no but putting down a foundation for the middle order to get a match winning score is the essence of opening the batting

It's all about blunting the new ball so the middle order aren't exposed
England dont because our openers are awful and the middle order, which is also useless are swept away
That said they get themselves out, got little to do with the ball half the time
