Saying goodbye to Victor later unfortunately. First broadcast 20th November 2000... the only episode I saw on first broadcast I believe.
It clashed with the first millionaire on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' on itv.
I remember the conspiracy that ITV purposely leaked information about Judith Kepel winning the million, just so people wouldn’t watch OFINTG on the BBC.
Yes I remember a giant controversy about it. The only way to handle a clash in those days was to do a Randall and make a VHS recording.
Millionaire was a massive show at the time so it would have pulled across loads of viewers no doubt. A shame really.

Rands probably still has the VHS tapes somewhere.
I got rid of all my vhs about 5 years back when my recorder broke

I have bad memories of that night as it was my job in the house to set the video for clashes and I did it wrong that evening. To this day I have never seen the final episode of OFITG in full.

The last episode of OFITG. It's like a Steven Moffat Doctor Who but watchable. I'd forgotten how oddly structured is, jumping about all over the place... just an incredibly ambitious bit of telly, nothing like a sitcom as we knew them then. I love it so much.
What do we reckon then? Did Margaret murder her? Oh, spoiler. Well Ginge has had 21 years to watch it, see if care.

I must have seen the last episode but I'm buggered if I have any memory of it

There was a OFITG Radio series, on Radio 2 I think. Just four episodes.
And one extra TV outing, Comic Relief 2001, which is interesting.

Do you remember how Victor dies at least?
He was ran over wasn't he?
Yep. In the rain, miles from home. A few months later, Margaret finds herself alone with the woman who knocked him down.
That was in the media so I knew that before seeing it
The whole thing is a blank

Richard Wilson was only 53 and for a long while didn't want the part. Victor was supposed to be 60.
The top alternative for the role was Les Dawson.

It's a mind bender, but it's absolutely true. Victor Meldrew was on the verge of being offered to Les Dawson. He died three years later btw.
'[Les] would have been my second choice,' Renwick said. 'It would have been a different character; he would have taken it in a different direction. But he had the lugubriousness and the attitude which would have worked. Anyway that didn't happen.'

Jim Broadbent was first choice for Del, I believe. He later played the bent cop Slater in the show.
