Draw agreed.

A shame but great heart can be taken that this was a fighting draw rather than the passive bollocks we saw, especially in Game 2.

There is life in this now.

Gelfand will be delighted with that and hopefully it will spur him to attack more with White tomorrow.

Anand had the initiative today and Gelfand wrestled it from him - with help.

Black had perpetual check chances with his Rooks - the pawn could not make it.

Perpetual check = draw.

Anand has been here before.

Gelfand has been a revelation at times though especially with his choice of Black Opening, the Grunfeld.

Could go two way, I guess. He could be flagging although I doubt it - the man has been around since forever. Or he could take real heart from the way he escaped today and it could lead on to something great tomorrow.

If we get another damp squib, like Game 2, then this is Anand's to lose.

If we get another titanic battle like today, then even if it is a draw, I would still fancy Gelfand to cause a shock later on.

Tomorrow should tell us a lot. The initial jabs have been thrust now and it's time for the bigger blows to come into play.

just looked at the anand/kasparov series, opened with 8 straight draws, then 5 of the next six were won. kasparov won twice with black in that sequence.

how rare is a black win?

Unlikely at Super-GM level but not unheard of.

No surprises in Game 4 so far as both players race through their first 16 moves.

Anand seems thoroughly prepared.

After move 21, I am starting to like Gelfand's position.

Two active Bishops as opposed to Anand's Bishop and Knight. Connected Rooks.

Nothing spectacular but I think his pieces are working slightly better than Vishy's.

It's a definite tactic to consider. Black has plenty of defence but to be fair, you're looking at the right sort of idea.
