Jose De Sousa
I have been watching pretty much every match this worlds and whilst watching De Sousa v Price which was a very flat affair my mind went to why does De Sousa not seem to be as good anymore?
It is common in darts for a player to have a short burst of form and then go off the boil, but De Sousa's high class performances for about 3 years on the floor and tv were no fluke, he hit a record amount of 180s in the Premier League and won the Grand Slam.
De Sousa is someone who has a pretty solid throw, a good stance and nothing weird that would suggest wild inconsistency when compared with someone like Klaasen with the elbow movement, the only obvious thing is he lurches forward a bit on the third dart under pressure. On the face of it therefore his form this year and for a lot of the last year is difficult to explain.
I noticed a lot of the follow through's on release from Jose v Price were quite 'flicky' and lacked conviction. If you go to 17:00 on the video below and watch his 3 darts at 225 you will see what I mean.
I decided to go and watch back highlights of Jose's 2020 grand slam win v Wade. If you go to 5:48 you will see much more of a solid follow through and his throw looks brilliant here. This is just one example but there's plenty of others throughout.
I'm not meaning to post this to slag off De Sousa here, he's still a good player but doesn't feel elite or title threatening anymore. I find how wild some players inconstencies are in darts especially in the lower end of the rankings interesting because it looks like they're throwing exactly the same way as they did when they're in red hot form but if you look a bit deeper into players techniques you may be able to see why something is off with their game.
Why do you think this is? Pressure off a crowd effecting Jose? Complacency in his practice? Natural evolution of a player?

Re: Jose De Sousa
It could be any of those factors.
Age could also be a factor. He is pushing 50. Even Taylor started to decline a bit once he reached that age.
Obviously Wright is a bit of an exception to that rule.

Re: Jose De Sousa
I think the crowd does have a lot to do with it. He won his grand slam behind closed doors, his piss poor counting and general unawareness(going for wrong finishes etc) can't help either. Top 16 player but unlikely to hit the heights again in my opinion

Agree with that, he seems to be snatching at Darts when up against it. Even more so now with crowds back.
Bristow, merely a tale, a fable...an image froze in time.

Re: Jose De Sousa
Players have their thresholds and De Sousa hit his in 2019/20. Sure he is a fine player but he wont win anything again

To answer Malt, Jose has said himself that he had adverse reactions to the vaccine, and in truth, while a very good player, his brief time as one of the very best players in the world was probably never going to last
