I remember it mate, I wondered how and why the selectors kept faith with him in the early days but he did mature well.

for much of his test career gooch averaged a steady 36, which against the attacks of those years wasnt bad anyway.

when he assumed the captaincy i think he averaged nearer 50.

strauss isnt really from the gooch mould i suppose.

I rate Strauss as a batsman and think he's far better than Gooch at this point. He's a bit negative as a captain but when was the last time England was first in the test rankings?

i cannot rate strauss above gooch, maybe rose tinted specs but there you go.

i dont think we have been since the rankings started, lose the next text against sri lanka and we wont be any longer.
