The whole of the 1979 event was also late night highlights only on BBC2.

Here's how the final was covered. 11:20pm and an elaborate description.

Speaking of which, I looked up the first world championship a while back.

Not a single dart was shown live as far as I could tell. The final itself was shown as only highlights around midnight.
Exactly, was a load of shite, stations started late and showed schools shite, and finished early, and sometimes went off air in the middle of the day.

Golden era my arse.
That turned out to be an incredibly accurate description of BBC2 on the day of the 78 world final.

Plodding through a Petula Clark TV special and episode 3 of The Mayor of Casterbridge to get to highlights of the world darts final at 11:40pm.

We should try that in 2024.

The listing for the 81 final. Did they not even televise the first 3 sets?

Golden era of television, apparently. Certainly wasnt for fucking live sport.

The youtube vids of the 81 final seem to confirm that the first 3 sets weren't televised.

They cut in at the top of set 4 (pic below) and zip through the rest of the game in 20mins. Still only highlights then. Golden. At least it wasn't in the graveyard slot that year.

Nothing wrong with that. I switch off various teams nowadays, I'm not suggesting we go back to that mind

Well yes, you dont have to watch them all. But nobody can say the 70s and 80s were a golden era of live sport, the technology and only 3/4 channels (which didnt broadcast 24/7) made that impossible.
Going back to that would be utter lunacy.

No one does, That's in your mind. People enjoyed the simpleness and freshness of it. Football match on TV was looked forward too etc

It's not going to happen. But people enjoyed the era when the FA Cup final had a massive build up & meant more, I know you loathe the competition. But its not been the same since the influx of matches but times move on but doesn't mean they are wrong because you enjoy "Goal rush" on a saturday

Well yes, nobody knew any better.

And yes, heaven forbid I watch live football at 3pm on a Saturday rather than watching people watching football on SSN :pointing:

I actually don't mind watching the scores come in. SSN & BT Sport are good to watch at that time. I hope there's no 3pm blackout, I'm traditional in that aspect, I know you find that tough to accept lol

Idk there's something about the old Jeff Stelling gang which makes good tv, compared to staring at 5 games simultaneously. Watching them shout for goals and the build up by Jeff to see who scores is exciting near the season ends and the old lineup was genuinely hilarious.

They completely ruined it tho by sacking Le Tissier, Thompson and Nicholas. Plus Chris Kamara's illness meant he was given less to do which was shite.
