The standard of the first and second rounds were a bit better than expected.

Today has been horrendous. The overall average from the QFs onward was around 85/86, with the highest average being Williams' 92 in the SF.

Tournament average below 90 for Williams. Well done to him, but when Durrant won last year, his worst match average was 97.

Similar shite to Fitton's win in 2016, but at least that was in a longer format so slightly more impressive. More jarring on the viewers, mind you.

The only average in the history of the revived WDT lower than both tonight was Machin in 2016 when he lost to Fitton, and that was over 22 legs.

Well, at least Veenstrapon didn't win it. Well done Jim.
Maybe this experience will help him to average more than 72 next time he plays Colin Osborne at lottery school.

Wesley Harms (88.10) 5-6 (90.33) Mark McGrath
Joe Chaney (86.93) 5-6 (90.95) Jim Williams
Roger Janssen (77.49) 4-6 (78.27) Sebastian Steyer
Richard Veenstra (84.81) 6-5 (80.97) Daniel Day

Richard Veenstra (80.01) 7-4 (79.25) Sebastian Steyer
Mark McGrath (81.99) 2-7 (92.57) Jim Williams

Richard Veenstra (84.67) 6-8 (85.36) Jim Williams

Y'all know I'm far from a "BDO basher" First two rounds were par for course, pretty much what you'd expect. Not great viewing throughout but you can always find a decent game or two. However, you'd usually expect the standard to pick up a little in later rounds, and that's exactly the opposite to what actually happened, as everything went downhill from there. A semi final with averages of 80 and 79, a final with averages of 85 and 84? There's hardly an excuse to defend this.

Sure you're not watching this expecting constant high 90 averages, but at least something consistent from a few players. The top 2-3 players should at least be able to hit a constant 92-93 average. The top 40 in the PDC PC events all average above the 93 mark. It's like the top seeds got there by accident or something, as if the outcome of games were decided by flipping a coin. The surprise players in these events (McGrath and Steyer this time) seem to be utterly insignificant, only get there because of a good draw, and they barely go on and achieve anything else.

It was a shorter format this year as well.

Which just makes the overall collapse in the standard for an alleged major that much worse. Especially when there's a minor PDC event on the same weekend showing it up for the joke it is.

Oche's roundup of the weekend:

"All in all a good tournament considering it was likely to be canned.

The Venue is superb & now the news its their for a futher 2 years. This could help give the BDO World Trophy its identity after 6 years. "Road to Blackburn" & it will stop all the "Will it be on" usually from myself lol

The Crowds were very good and the place was packed. Even if their was a number of free tickets its better visually & for the place to see the place looking full. Hopefully next year things will improve on this front

Eurosport production was very good, 2 of the best comms in darts with a fine presenter which gave the World Trophy much needed gravitas. (4)

The Standard of play may have dropped today but it was good overall. Its fits what we should all understand & expect within a BDO tournament. The Ladies game was excellent standard and its improving.

Congratuations to Lisa Ashton & Jim Williams on winning the titles. Mark McGrath & Joe Chaney proved why the regional leaders need to stay within the World Trophy Qualifying Criteria.

Paul Booth & the Refs did an outstanding job. A new Era but they fitted in extremely well & its a testament of the high class of refs around the County & Exbo systems

Onwards to the World Masters at the Circus Tavern, Will be looking forward to it & who knows what will happen"

For Ashton. Thankfully it didn't make a difference to the end result.
Here's the comedy moment.

It's because the ref didn't see it and Lisa already took the darts out before the score was called

'No' has gone from 15 to 16 since it started as well.

Wishful thinking perhaps?
