I think it's largely been that way since around 2020 when he changed his darts supplier. That was when his defeats on TV started to become more regular.

Although a quick scan suggests he was unlucky to lose on TV at times in the early 2020s. Wright played the game of his life to beat him at the 2021 Matchplay, as did Chizzy to beat him at Ally Pally 2021. Hump also played exceptionally to beat him at the 2021 UK Open.

Over the past year the likes of Gilding, Heta, Dolan, Dobey, Van Veen, Williams and Mensur all beat him while playing decently, but not exceptionally. So you may have a point.

I don't know how 'unlucky' MvG was to have amazing averages thrown at him, I think it's as much a sign that they weren't scared of him anymore than 'luck' (same goes for Ian White when he seemed to have ton plus averages thrown at him left right and centre at the Worlds)

Excellent finishing was the main reason. Wade would be even better at 301 than 501, and obviously worse at 1001 that would favour the likes of Lewis more.
