Wright. He lived with, pushed, beat and at times dismantled peak MVG and a 90% Gary.

Price has started hoovering tv titles after the ceiling has dropped to the lowest it's been since pre Taylor.

Is there evidence to support falling standard?

Eye test and dwindling number of major titles for MVG and Anderson (both of whom are top 5-6 of all time) in the last 2 years compared to the previous few is enough for me.

I did say ceiling, not standard.

You seemed to have plenty of evidence when Duzza won the PL

I don't think the standard is falling overall but there has been a power vacuum at the top for the last few years, which Price certainly exploits. Pretty much no one can play well tournament after tournament when 3-4 years ago you still had Gando and Wright as some legit challengers to MVG

Peak Anderson would've found a way to beat Van den Bergh at the Matchplay last year. Either by demolition or grinding. Same for Wade against de Sousa at the Grand Slam. I'm not sure their standard capability has dropped, rather the consistency.

Van Gerwen and Anderson barely string together 3 or 4 ton plus averages in a row anymore. If you look back, there was a silly streak of double figure games where MVG averaged over a ton in the PL.

I genuinely think Price's standard dropped too in 2020. His Worlds win was pretty weak in comparison to previous years and everyone talks about his charmed Grand Prix run. He just found a way to win, which he never used to have pre mid 2018.

Just to back up the legit challengers point...

In the 2015-2017 era, only Taylor, Anderson and Barney beat Van Gerwen anywhere near regularly and Wright frequently troubled him. But nobody else came close. Wade, Whitlock, Price, Lewis etc all had appalling records vs Van Gerwen in this period.

Now, you have the likes of Whitlock, Clayton, Price and Durrant making a habit of beating him. That and losing to Luke Humphries (no disrespect to his performance) would've been unheard of in 2015-17.

The MVG vs Humphries game was like the MVG vs Gilding game at Minehead in an alternate universe. Both UK Open semi finals, both MVG vs a big outsider. Both Humphries and Gilding averaged 105+ but the peak MVG did enough to beat Gilding. The 2021 MVG was massacred by Humphries, which logically implies he may have lost to 2015 Gilding too. It's more evidence of the drop off.
