I don't know why anyone with any ambition and ability stays. All it takes is one bad performance at Lakeshite and your whole year is ruined on the basis of one match. You lose in the PDC and its onto the next week's potential pay day.

Exactly that. I compared playing the BDO circuit to a lottery on TSOD a couple of years ago, and the usual suspects came out with "it's not about the money", "nothing wrong with not rewarding anyone well except the Lakeside champion", and all the other old standards. And the situation has only got worse since then. (In the BDO I mean, not on TSOD. On second thought...)
