Top 10 Lakeside final winning averages:
97.58 - Phil Taylor (1992)
97.50 - Eric Bristow (1984)
97.50 - Eric Bristow (1985)
97.47 - Phil Taylor (1990)
97.08 - Andy Fordham (2004)
96.78 - Raymond van Barneveld (2005)
96.18 - Stephen Bunting (2014)
95.55 - John Walton (2001)
95.19 - Glen Durrant (2019)
95.01 - Martin Adams (2010)
Bottom 5 Lakeside final winning averages:
87.42 - John Lowe (1979)
86.43 - Scott Waites (2013)
86.10 - Eric Bristow (1981)
83.97 - John Lowe (1993)
82.44 - John Part (1994)
Not that surprising, seeing as Bunting was the third best player in the world when he was running roughshod over the rest of the BDO
Something a little more truthful is that Lowe's and Bristow's averages on there weren't Lakeside Final averages. Although I initially said top 5 Lakeside final averages; should have said BDO Final averages.
Suppose Fordham's semifinal and final averages that year are more proof of what we saw last week and most of the majors this year: what usually matters is getting through to the latter stages and then performing your best.
Having said that, Walton's performance in the final could have been as good as those of the early rounds, just that the averages would dip a bit in correlation with more sets played. An average of 94 over 9 sets, punctuated with spells of 100 or more, wins the game in the same way that an average just shy of 100 over 3 sets would.
