Van Gerwen is now winning big tournaments (with this and the Premier League) with more inconsistent play, not just the outright dominant play of old. That increases his all-time status. Oh well, it is what it is.

Van Gerwen thrives on confidence. His elite scoring is virtually back, and it's been enough to win the Premier League and World Matchplay, despite inconsistency on the doubles. The genie is almost out of the bottle. The key part of the final tonight was Price going from 6-4 up to 9-5 up but not holding for 10-5, instead going to 9-6. After that, Price badly needed a spurt of top form at 11-9 or 13-12 and didn't get it.

I thought it was a great Matchplay... I love the tournie anyway, but apart from a few mediocre 1st round matches, which you will always get, especially with a few relative newbies, it was very enjoyable....

Quarter finals onwards was superb
