I never have understood why they downgraded the Grand Prix

Probably because it went on for fucking hours because of the format. Quarter final night especially. The final was cut so they could have it on after the rugby grand final and it didnt go on for ages. In essence, TV is the answer.

Is that why it switched to Sunday to Saturday?

That was more so they could tie it in with the rugby grand final aye.
The Worlds final always has a PL game on before it for the same reason. Keep the audience.

Darts events as TV shows indeed. External broadcasters have ideas about how to build a night of telly and if that means squishing a miniaturised Grand Prix Final into Super League Grand Final night then the PDC sort of have to lump it (or show it on a service they fully control).
