Major for me. Yes since the format changed you get odd results (Muffin Man beating Wright) and some hopeless jobbers slipping through the net to qualify but there's two reasons I think the PCF has major status.
1. With the odd draw structure, you sometimes get big players meeting early when the ones who sack off the tour (Anderson, RVB etc) are a lower seed and you have to beat them early to progress (and eventually win the event). You don't get players like Dross hiding in Top 16 seed status getting easier draws off success in a tournaments held 18 months ago. The OOM is one year and your position is deserved, if youve been shite and scraped in, nowhere to hide. Improve to win or you're out.
2. The flip side of that is that you often get lesser players reaching the latter stages because they're more adept at the floor and thus are a higher seed; like a pre top 16 Clayton in 2017 and Little Webster and Kist the year before.
But they don't historically win the event. I feel like out of all of the "majors", this one usually has the highest ranked winner after the Worlds, (except for Nicholson and Painter). There was a spell where Taylor, Van Gerwen and Anderson all hogged this event and subsequently won the Worlds a couple of weeks after. Even Gurney was in the top 4 when he won it. The relentless format of loads of games within 3 days lends itself for the cream eventually rising to the top and I think history has backed this up.
