Cristiano Ronaldo is a better player than Messi in my opinion.
I seriously don't think you can say 1 player is the best ever as the era's are completely different plus you have 11 positions on the pitch in different positions.

I can think of a dozen defenders who were proclaimed the best in the world throughout the time where those 2 were the 2 best players

I don't know enough about football. In theory there should be defenders who are as good at preventing goals as there are strikers who are good at scoring them.
