Probably because it went on for fucking hours because of the format. Quarter final night especially. The final was cut so they could have it on after the rugby grand final and it didnt go on for ages.

In essence, TV is the answer.

Yes, I agree. Just a shade though. 2014 that was introduced.
The slam either gained credence or lost it when they ended bdo entry Depends on your stance
When the GSOD started, in the early years of the event, the standard of entry from the BDO was generally good or certainly better than recent times and this showed in the results. Waites won and reached a final and Anderson represented the BDO in this event. Did MVG ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
MVG switched to the PDC with King, VVDV and Klassen in early 2007.

I recall they shared the same management company.
It seems MVG did represent the BDO in the first GSOD in 2007

MVG qualified for the 2007 GSOD through playing BDO events, but didn't represent the BDO as such.

Look at the tournament brackets. Greatbach's name has the BDO next to it in brackets. MVG's does not due to him switching to the PDC earlier in the year.

Yet when Bunting and Duzza played in the slam after qualifying whilst in the BDO then switching, they represented the BDO. Duzza didn’t get his money onto the oom due to this.

Fair point
However if the finals had Taylor in he wrapped them up quickly
How many of the long format finals went beyond 11 sets?

It was a ranking event by then. The Grand Slam became a ranking event in 2015. In 2007-2014, it was at the disgression of the PDC to just invite whoever they wanted, even though they would make the criteria known, such as World Championship semi finalists on both sides, all the PDC major finalists, World Masters champion etc. the PDC often changed some details to suit their purpose. Martin Adams said he played the 2015 Grand Slam because the BDO asked him to. This suggests that the PDC and BDO had come to some agreement now that the Grand Slam was a ranked event about a more precise criteria for entry rather than it being invitational.

2003: Phil Taylor 7-2 John Part
2004: Colin Lloyd 7-3 Alan Warriner
2005: Phil Taylor 7-1 Colin Lloyd
2006: Phil Taylor 7-4 Terry Jenkins
2007: James Wade 6-3 Terry Jenkins
2008: Phil Taylor 6-2 Raymond van Barneveld
2009: Phil Taylor 6-3 Raymond van Barneveld
2010: James Wade 6-3 Adrian Lewis
2011: Phil Taylor 6-3 Brendan Dolan
2012: Michael van Gerwen 6-4 Mervyn King

So nothing really to support the change in terms of timing
Should have remained 7 sets to mirror the worlds

It doesnt really matter, given it starts gone 8pm these days you would have fucked off to bed at half 9 when the score was 3-3.

I'm fine with the current Grand Prix format. You have to consider that double start games last longer

Really dont see the issue.

Matchplay final - 18-22 legs needed to win it, in 95% of cases its only going to need 18
WGP final - 15-23 legs needed to win it, and will vary wildly.

Whats the problem?

It just didn't need downgrading
That said other than the 5-4 none of the other recent shorter finals would have any chance of a different outcome
