Durrant says the top 16 seeds won't be getting byes to the last 32 at the Masters this year and they'll start from the start like in the real days. Which suggests to me that the pursuit of serious TV is not a priority anymore, for this year at least.

Presumably this will mean no guaranteed prize money for the top 16, not that it was huge money previously but that's another kick in the balls for their top players. Add to that Durr admitting that the WDT prize fund being slashed has already been a problem for how he's budgeted for the year with sponsors ("I won't lie, I'm very disappointed in the prize money being reduced").

It's on the Weekly Dartscast podcast, so audio only. The bit about the Masters is from 36:10, I'll type direct quotes if you gimme a minute! :

"I've won the World Masters twice - I was gonna go for the 3-time at the World Masters but I'm gonna have to do it the hard way this year because the Top 16 don't get a bye to the last 32 now, and we're all in the draw from the first round, so I'm gonna have to try and win it like Bob Anderson did all those years ago."

It is about time though. Although I do remember the year it went from 8 players exempt to 16 players exempt, because they were all coming in a round earlier the guaranteed payout for the seeds went from £500 to £250, Robbie Green was fucking fuming about it.

Warty wont like it at all. Plus it means the players will all have to be in Brid for the floor bit, its probably why its all been reduced to a 3 day event from a 4 day one.

Oh and I wonder how long it will be before someone claims it is the new broadcaster who has demanded this change, along with the change to the stage finals running on a fucking Tuesday and Wednesday....

The players at the top of the system who have got used to the luxury of extreme byes won't be feeling all nostalgic about this. When they fail to break even at the shrivelled WDT, they'll have no guaranteed money at the Masters to get things ticking over again. Wonder if a few of them will hit the challenge tour. Wayne Jones is making this lot look like mugs. Wayne Jones!

Suppose a comparison is needed.

Guaranteed money for seeds at 2016 Lakeside, 2016 WDT and 2016 Masters = £3250 + £1000 + £250 = £4500
Guaranteed money for seeds at 2017 Lakeside, 2017 WDT and 2017 Masters = £3250 + £500 + £0 = £3750

BDO gonna grow x

So how many games will a top 16 player now have to win at the Masters to make prize money?

(Cuz that's a demoralising prospect for the softies, I would imagine, plus Masters money itself might be dropping if the WDT is an indicator).

Would assume seeds would be guaranteed to be in the Last 256 rather than having to play a Last 512 match, so thats three matches to win to guarantee £250.

Ah right, doesn't sound so awful. When everything is considered though, there's bound to be a pile of moaning by any players who regard themselves as proper darts A-listers. And judging by what Durrant was saying about sponsors' plans getting messed around by the WDT changes, the loss of guaranteed money could cause some problems. Hopefully everyone knew about the change a long time ago... lol.

The catch is that winning three rounds at the Masters is a bit of a different prospect than winning three rounds at the British Open or someplace, because there will be plenty of international players capable enough to put out the travelling club, rather than the usual 90% pub players field.

Anyway, sounds like they'll probably play down to the last 16 on the floor and scrap the last 32 stage games altogether?

Why would anyone sponsor a BDO player anyway? Guaranteed one appearence of your patch on TV a year?
