Re: "Have you heard of Joe Hitchcock?"
You should feel ashamed.
He deserves to be in the all-time top 5, certainly top 10, yet I wouldn't be surprised if the majority here votes No?

Re: "Have you heard of Joe Hitchcock?"
The greatest darts player of the 40s, 50s and 60s. Was the first professional darts player which prevented him from partaking in the News of the World. Went all over the country with his trickshots involving throwing nails with stunning accuracy, hitting things held on someone's tongue or behind their ears. Millions of people tuned in on the radio for the few matches he had with Jim Pike.
His 'show' was on the same level as the likes of Tommy Cooper and Cliff Richard arguably. Raised over £70,000 for charity in three years which would now equal two million.

Here's some clips:
I've watched and read this once before, before I joined this forum, and forgot about it since. He did things back in the day no one is able of duplicating today. Not even Phil Taylor or Michael van Gerwen, based on the circumstances of the 50s.

Re: "Have you heard of Joe Hitchcock?"
There were no majors back in the day.
Unless you want to argue that the News of the World - which he was not allowed to play in because he was a PROFESSIONAL - was a major.
