The Detente period was basically a situation where PDC and BDO players could play in each other's events, except that they could only play in 1 World Championship, so we had situations like Ronnie Baxter (a BDO player) reaching the 1998 World Matchplay final and coming within 1 dart of winning it before losing to Rod Harrington, and Alan Warriner (a PDC player) reaching the 1998 World Masters final and leading 2-0 in sets before losing 2-3 to Les Wallace. There was even a situation in 1997 where reigning Raymond van Barneveld was entered into the World Matchplay qualifiers but failed to show up or something against Mick "The Stick" Manning.

Martin Adams was annoyed at Barry Hearn's actions at that time in late 2001, saying that it was against the Tomlin Order, and Adams had nothing to do with the PDC for the next 14 years, until playing in the 2015 Grand Slam of Darts.
Him and Larry Butler didn't arrive in time

Funnily enough, the BDO allowed Beaton, Manley, and Part to compete in the 2002 World Masters.

Yes. The Masters of Darts in 2005 (PDC vs. BDO) and 2007 (England vs. Netherlands) were neutral in terms of PDC/BDO sanctioning, although the latter year featured only PDC players in the end. Some PDC players played in the BDO sanctioned International Darts League and World Darts Trophy events in 2006-2007, largely because the Dutch authorities were kicking up a fuss with the BDO, and wanted Barney playing in those events. Barry Hearn then basically ended PDC co-operation with the IDL and WDT and created the PDC sanctioned Grand Slam of Darts instead.

In Fairness PDC would allow the BDO Players to compete in the UK Open. Many of them didn't of course

Anderson, Fitton and O'Sheep all played in at least one of the UK Open PDC qualifiers in 2005.

Anderson got to the final of the Scotland event, losing to THE PIEMAN.

I don't know how many of the three qualified for the Finals that year - Anderson definitely did - but none of them played in it.

In the Last 16 of the 2003 UK Open, Colin Monk (then a BDO player) beat reigning PDC World Champion John Part 9-8.

Part later beat Monk 10-0 in the first round of the 2004 World Matchplay.

This was the first final I remember being truly invested in - I watched it whilst recording Who Framed Roger Rabbit on ITV (I'd just been given my first video recorder for my bedroom - I was 11).

Wanted Burnett to win and was chuffed to bits when he did - I remember being gutted when he lost the final to Beaton in 96 as well.

1995 BDO World Championship Final (Notes)

- Preview with John Part & Bobby George, George mentions about Burnetts match with Peter Wright who he says is the "Bouncing Boy"

- BBC show a drawing of lots to throw first done by BDO Director Sam Hawkins

- Part predicted Barney, George predicted Burnett

- Players from the tournament on the walk ons. Very short walk ons with them holding flags of their countries

- Tournament Averages: Barneveld 91.11, Burnett 90.21

- Tony Green said to John Part after viewing his name on the trophy "If you don't fancy doing darts anymore you will make a great commentator" Part replied "Thank you"

- Green mentions that darts is now more family friendly

- Nice to see the players in the crowd Mike Gregory, Steve Beaton & Paul Williams shown as too Bob Potter

- Burnett starting 139 on 20s with Barney on 118... Bizarre, comms don't mention anything about it

- Green getting over how good this championship has been, Part agrees

- People smoking in the crowd, a bygone era in display

- Green with a dig at the WDC saying Lakeside is the "Only Prestigious championship in the world"

- Burnett distracted by the crowd 3 times before throwing.

- Tony Green says there is a "New Era" with us

- Barney breaks the Lakeside 180 record with 30

- Some random South Korean women in the Audience, Green says she goes home on Tuesday

- John Part saying he's had a great year as World Championship "Travelled to loads of places"

- Barney missed 2 darts at tops for 4-4, Burnett takes it to make it 5-3. Part said that's it for Barney

- Burnett interviews "This means everything to me and for Wales, I've not been well this week but i got the job done"

- Barney also interviewed "Missing doubles, makes it hard to win the title, Richie doesn't miss many doubles"

- Burnett "Leighton, this is coming back to the valleys"

The Match was closer than the scoreline, A good final. Burnett on this showing would give Taylor (1995) a good game. Green was good on comms, But watching this game you see that Part will become a legendary commentator as well as a player.

It was odd when Green popped up as a pundit on PDC event around 2008.

The £34k winner's prize in 1995 is the equivalent of around £68k today. Basically double. Which isn't actually wildly more than the 50k won by McGuirk.

A close Embassy final between Barney and Burnett in 1995. Barney started it very well, but missed chances for a 2 set lead, Burnett led 3-1, Barney levelled at 3-3, Burnett gritted it out to win 6-3. The semi final between Barney and Adams is well remembered too. Adams led 3-1, Barney won 5-4.

After his good 1995 Embassy, Adams from 1996-2004 only had 1 semi final loss and 1 quarter final loss at Lakeside, and was notorious for "bottle" issues at that time, most famously of all in the 1999 Embassy quarter final against Mason, where Adams led 4-1 and had loads of match darts, missing most of them by the width of the wire to be fair. Mason came back to win 5-4.

I remember it even more than usual, with Richie Burnett being Welsh, and a lot of the Welsh public being more into it than normal. The dark period of the Manic Street Preachers (i.e. The Holy Bible) at that time, and Richey Edwards soon to vanish off the face of the Earth.
