Humphries in the 2023 GSOD and later rounds of Ally Pally 2024 was a beast.

People might argue recency bias but the domination he had in tv events in the 2nd half of 2023 as well as his ET dominance was at a ridiculous level especially to dominate in this era when there's loads of players capable of chucking in a 108 average to knock you out.

I still stand by one of the best players i've watched in peak spells is Peter Wright though, I just think because he's slower than someone like MVG it doesn't look as spectacular

Even with modern equipment I imagine it is rare that a player has averaged over 108 in the latter stages at Ally Pally.

Yet Hump did that in his semi-final against Scott Williams.

PT13 wrote: Sun Nov 21, 2021 5:32 pm Some people used to laugh around 2015 time when I suggested that the new HD boards brought in after the 2014 World Championship were helping Michael van Gerwen, and had harmed Phil Taylor along with his switch from Unicorn darts to Target darts. Go back in darts history though, and the 1970s boards were virtually impossible to stack the darts because of the thick wires, and it was only slightly better for much of the 1980s. Most of the 1990s boards still had staples in them. Up to the 2014 World Championship, it was SD boards. The HD boards since 2014 have changed the game further, and now an Ultra HD board making the targets stand out even further still.
Why did it specifically hurt Taylor and benefit MVG?

Playing styles?
More due to it narrowing the gap at the top of the game when the targets on the board become easier to hit. HD boards weren't the only factor, as there was Taylor's change in darts manufacturer. Van Gerwen did dominate in late 2012 and the first half of 2013 aside from the 2013 World Championship final, so he did prove he could do it on the SD boards, but he did then go 6 months in the second half of 2013 without winning a tournament until the Players Championship Finals.
So the player-friendly boards of today do not just increase averages up and down the field, but also potentially reduce the gap between the top talent and those a tier below.

Which in theory would make it even more difficult for a Humphries to dominate. Meaning him doing so was especially impressive.

+1, peak Wright was ridiculous.

Upon checking.

MVG did average 108 in the semis of Ally Pally 2023.

Chizzy averaged 107 to beat MVG in the quarters of Ally Pally 2021.

Beyond those and Hump's there have not been any averages in the latter stages of Ally Pally over 106 this decade.

Matchplay 2021 was an example of peak Wright.

Especially in the semi and final.
