Yeah but 2 of them were pre-2012.
They were at the worlds so they count

Who else?

Barney
Cross
Wright
Chizzy
Gando, Whitlock, Suljovic, Wade. The last 3 were 2010-2012. To be fair if you look at his post-2012 record he hasn't really done a lot wrong.
Suljovic was a part-timer then, and yet 10 years on, when he's won TV events and reached as high as 5th in the world, he's not got past that stage ffs

Every year since 2015 at the very least (probably 2014 too, and possibly 2013?) he's turned up as favourite, I'm sure he thinks he should have at least 7 by now...
At the 2013 World Championship, van Gerwen became the tournament favourite (ahead of Taylor) after beating Lewis in the quarter finals and surviving 2 match darts. The quality and pace of the match was unbelievable. Prior to that match, both Taylor and Barney were favoured over van Gerwen despite Taylor and Barney being in the same half. Van Gerwen was the pre-match favourite to beat Lewis going into their quarter final, even though Lewis was the 2-time defending world champion. Going into the final between Taylor and van Gerwen, van Gerwen was 4/5 while Taylor was Evens. Van Gerwen led 2-0, Taylor got back to 2-2, van Gerwen led 4-2 and had 2 darts for 5-2 but missed them both. Taylor won 7-4.

It's often forgotten that Cross had the first match dart in their 2018 World Championship semi final match.

Van Gerwen will feel he should certainly have at least 5 by now.

He should've beat Cross in 2017, who was very fortunate to not get done by Van Gerwen, Bellyboy and Dimitri enroute to the final. However, he destroyed Taylor so that proved it wasn't a fluke given how poor he's been since in comparison.

Also, even though he probably shouldn't beat himself up about it, he threw away the first one vs Taylor and the Cross one as I mentioned.

The middle one in 2017, he destroyed a 109 averaging Barney in the semis and then beat Anderson. That year was very impressive. I think this could've been the Reyes game year too.

However, the other two years he has won, he's had some bang average opposition. In 2014, he faced a diabolical version of Lewis in the semis and he beat an embryonic incarnation, choker-phase if you will, version of Wright.

In 2019, he faced Ryan Joyce in the quarters, (which was a miracle on his part as his scoring was mediocre and Norris and Wade should've beat him) and a doubling disaster from Bellyboy in the final.

For him, he'll feel he should have 5 at least but I think it's evened itself out. He should feel hard done by though, if Anderson gets to 3 on Sunday, given that Van Gerwen works as hard and cares more than anyone and Anderson gives the facade of not giving a fuck.

Against Taylor he had chances to pull clear ahead, but it wasn't like he bottled it or anything iirc. Against Cross, he had 6 match darts I believe, with most of them being on the wire, and with the crowd whistling against him too, so while he'd have been devastated to miss those chances to win the world title, they weren't horrendous bottle jobs

Cross was very lucky in some ways, 2 match darts against Smith, 6 against MvG, but my oh my did he play well that tournament. Sometimes you earn your luck, eh?

He seems to have been about for ages, but still only 31, he will get at the very least 5, when you consider Taylor played well into his 50s, fair dues he was a little special...In theory baldy could go on for another 25yrs, but i doubt it, that's a lot of possible finals ..

MvG has said in interviews that he doesn't plan on playing past 40, but that could change..
He should win at least 2 or 3 more, but if he continues to be less dominant each year, he may find world titles very hard to win
I think it would do him good to lose his number 1 spot, as it may give him the motivation to get it back

Always return to Federers forehand, never backhand, never play defensive against Barcelona, never double-team on Jordan, don't foul Shaq... Right?

d14 Mensur was fun to watch, with his onstage antics and being one of the best pure finishers in the game. His game vs princess in Matchplay final was one of best games Ive seen.
With slump in his form he started pulling Tornton and probably we wont see him too often now.
As for Price, he is hated for many reasons, for me primarily his over celebration which seems too forced. Say what you will about MvBaldfish, but his antics are not that annoying.

He did. Sign of the end times with Smith winning the Worlds.

Taylor is smiling somewhere tonight.
