If anyone fancies going for a dig, find us the times when previous World Final pairings occurred in later years in earlier rounds. What's the earliest round it's happened in?
Taylor and Painter twice met in the Last 32, in 2016 and 2017.
Good show. 2 in 1.

And indeed, as mentioned by you and thegentle, the 2008 World Final had been a Last 32 game in 2010: Part v Shepherd.

If we go in the opposite direction, we can mention Taylor v MVG. That was the World Final in 2013, having been a Last 64 game in 2008.

Also, MVG v Wright. The World Final in both 2014 and 2020, having been a Last 32 game in 2013.
Taylor vs. MvG was also a Last 32 game in 2009.

Oh yes, I remember that now. Those two games are very handy for showing the difference between the Taylors of 08 and 09.

I wonder how much the course of darts history would have changed had a young (but still balding) van Gerwen taken that match dart against Taylor in that first year at Ally Pally?

Taylor would have been knocked out in 2008 in the 1st round. Van Gerwen would have lost in the next round and we still had Part as the winner

That's a very interesting question. In early 2007, van Gerwen had switched to the PDC as probably the third most in-form player in the world at the time (behind Taylor and Barney), and during the year MvG had been consistent but didn't win a floor tournament, had some beatings from players like Colin Osborne, and had some frustrations with the TV events, not qualifying for the Las Vegas Desert Classic and the World Grand Prix. A win over Taylor at the 2008 World Championship might have given MvG the confidence to get back near the top instead of seeing his confidence slowly ebb away in 2008, 2009 and most of 2010 with sponsors deserting him. Hard to know for sure. It might have just been a one-off victory, and then Mark Walsh beats him.

Indeed. The Taylor of the 2008 World Championship had fight in him, but inconsistent darts, despite a couple of months of good form beforehand. The Taylor of the 2009 World Championship is probably the greatest of all, went into the tournament after 9 months plus of dominating. In 2008, Taylor had won convincingly the US Open, Premier League, Las Vegas Desert Classic, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, European Championship and Grand Slam of Darts. The only one he had failed to win was the 2008 UK Open (lost 9-10 to Barney in quarter finals), which turned out to be Barney's last win over Taylor on TV for 6 years. And 2009 was even more dominant for Taylor, won everything on TV except the Premier League. 2010 went the same way (everything except the PCF), until Lewis beat him at the World Grand Prix.
