Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
That would fuck up the ranking system even more. They'd be better off raising prize money for other big majors.

Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
It would mean the world champ is world number 1. Not sure how that fucks up the rankings. It's the biggest tournament of the year and should have more weight in the rankings

Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
Yes, but not to the extent it is now, or what it would be if the prize money for the World Championship was £1,000,000.
The World Championship prize money for the winner in 2013 was £200,000. Now it's £500,000. In the same period, the World Matchplay winner prize money in 2013 was £100,000 and is now £150,000. It distorts the ranking system.

Spot on. And it's not just the winner's cheque, every cunt can qualify for Ally Pally now and stink up the rankings just by winning a few games.PT13 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 20, 2021 11:15 pmYes, but not to the extent it is now, or what it would be if the prize money for the World Championship was £1,000,000.

Not too many more examples though that I can think of. The issue is it being a 2 year OOMSafc wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 12:34 amJamie Lewis was the best example of thisThe Thorn wrote: ↑Tue Jul 20, 2021 11:28 pmSpot on. You're probably right tbf the 2 year OOM dosen't help I do think a 1 year system like what they use in Tennis would be a better system.Dfc180 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 12:08 pmNot too many more examples though that I can think of. Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
An interview from Barry a year or so ago, he said that he had no intention of changing the ranking system as he believed that if a player did well at the worlds, then they deserved to be rewarded in the ranking system for more than a year... His goal was to get the 64th ranked player over 100k and at least 5 players over a millionSafc wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 12:23 pmYou're probably right tbf the 2 year OOM dosen't help I do think a 1 year system like what they use in Tennis would be a better system.Dfc180 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 12:08 pmNot too many more examples though that I can think of. Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
There are a lot more examples, they are just less notable because not a lot of them get to the semis and not a lot of them collapse completely like Lewis did. People are clogging up the rankings all the time because they won 1 or 2 games at Ally Pally.Dfc180 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 12:08 pmNot too many more examples though that I can think of. The 2 year OoM has something to do with it but it's not just that. If they simply switched to a 1 year ranking, the weight of the Worlds compared to the other events would stay the same.

Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
They only clog up rankings if they continue to win games though. If you look now since the euro tour isn't on a lot of the cloggers (white,Whitlock,Gurney, hopp, suljovic) are starting to drop down the rankings due to not automatically qualifying for events, thats where another problem lies because one good run at a Euro gets you into 2 majorsThe Thorn wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 2:03 pmThere are a lot more examples, they are just less notable because not a lot of them get to the semis and not a lot of them collapse completely like Lewis did. Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
The Order of Merit worked well years ago. It gets less and less effective every year that World Championship prize money shoots up to a huge level while other big tournaments relatively don't. Either raise the money of other big tournaments more, or bring in a points system. The tennis system has a points system, like 2,000 points for winning one of the four majors, 1,000 points for winning Masters 1000, 500 points for winning ATP500 events, and 250 points for winning ATP250 events.
